So i have looked around for answers to these problems and havent seen the same description so I am starting a new post.
New to Mac’s and MC21. New MacBook Pro with everything running el capitan and MC21.0.64
Perhaps I just dont understand how to properly configure Airplay within MC21 but certainly Apple does not provide configuration options of any kind on their end. The problem is that every time I start MC21 if I dont first go into sound preferences and select airplay I get an error message from MC21 “something went wrong with playback” and MC21 is selecting the wrong output (core audio as opposed to airplay). the same thing happens if I close the lid on the Mac and then try to resume the music. I then have to shut down everything and start over.
Solutions??

JRiver MC doesn't work with Airplay, unfortunately.
Best alternative i know of is Airfoil (an external app) but it introduces a certain lag in playback.
If you can live with that it works satisfactory.

No. i cant justify paying for an app to “fix" another app.
