in panes view (or otherwise) i would like to add a picture of album artist

can it be done and if so how ?

MC supports pictures of Artists in the Artists view.  I don't think those pictures show in any view except a Categories view of Artist.  I just tried it with a Categories view of Year and then Artist and it show the Artist pictures.

To get Artist pictures you can do it semi-automatically:  Right click on an artist.  Cover Art > get artist images from lastfm .  That will pull the most popular artist image from Lastfm.com .  Those images get stored in your Cover Art directory, in a subdirectory called Artists.  You can add a picture there manually for each artist, or change them after they are automatically downloaded.
