If I compress all of my stored movies in order to save space, will I still be able to play them in jriver. In other words, is the program capable of unzipping my movie files, and playing them smoothly. Do I compress only the movie file, and not the coverart, descriptions etc? or do I compress both.

Video files should already be highly compressed, since they all use lossy CODECs like H.264, MPEG2, and various audio CODECs. Even if you achieved decent compression rates, I don't think it would be worth the hassle.
Storage gets cheaper every year. Your movie files stay the same size. I'm of the mindset that I'll be buying more storage every few years, for a while, until my collection is closer to "done".
I have no idea if MC supports any kind of on the fly compress/decompress, but I doubt it.
