Please read VERY carefully. This is a BETA version of 9.1. If you expect things to work, please download the latest 9.0 build from this thread:
http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=MediaCenter;action=di splay;num=1054751628
but if you're patient and willing to help us work out some of the bugs, you can download 9.1 here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter91233.exe
(backup your library before installing)
Please report any 9.1 problems in this thread. Keep a list of problems and if they aren't fixed in the next build, please post the list again.
History:
1. Fixed: When no CD burners were installed, "system info" would return an error about invalid argument.
2. Changed: "Enter" leaves fullscreen image playback.
3. Fixed: Returning from fullscreen would cause the keyboard focus to be reset.
4. Fixed: Double-clicking on title bar of the main window would not maximize MC.
-
WOW ;D
That was fast.

Please read VERY carefully. 1. Fixed: When no CD burners were installed, "system info" would return an error about invalid argument.
It worked:

What's happening with properties thing that was broken after 226.
Didn't work for me in 230 or 232, I keep reverting to 226, haven't tried 233. Have not seen any mention of it being fixed.

"What's happening with properties thing"
properties thing?
whats that?
-
Still getting that scrolling error. I have created a video to show the problem as it comes across better that way than just words. Heres the link:
http://nocodeuk.iwarp.com/ Okay. Changed this slightly. As my server does not allow remote linking I have posted a link on my site near the bottom. Ignore the content :) Its about 4 years old but I dont wanna delete as it has some useful code I may wanna reuse ;D

It's possible we broke something and don't know about it. Please start a new thread and provide some details.

1)I think I get the same bug mentioned by NoCodeUK: dragging the scroll bar in the options menu changes the appearance of the scroll bar from MC skin style to the default windows style and back, making scrolling very jerky. This bug has been there forever!
2)When one uses ASIO for streaming web content, switching stations causes stuttering and occasionally crashes.
3) MC downloads *.rm files instead of streaming them
This is an old bug.
3) I also liked selective text for tool bar buttons.
4)Ease of Use Suggestion: Pictures of buttons should be in menues to the lefte of the corresponding action.
-
This is so very minor, but when you maximize MC, the center button (the green button in the top right corner with the PixOS skin) doesn't change. Doesn't change to the "Restore Down" button like it should.
May be skin related, I'm not sure

Can the DSP studio show up in the action window instead it's own window?
-
B2. When MC is busy for a long while (such as updating properties for 5,000 files), the display does not update, which means I can't access my desktop, and other windows will show ghost images when closed, moved, resized, etc.
B3. Embedded images within music files are not transferred over the Media Server. They should show in Playing Now, as thumbnails, and in the properties windows.
B5. Running mouse up the rating column will keep the rating hover effect on once you leave the area.
B7. Error when loading this jpeg: http://glh.brim.net/test/jrmc/IMG_0382.jpg
B9. Page Down in thumbnail mode doesn't work if there are 1.9_ rows or less.
B10. Full screen Track Info does not quite go full screen. Some of the frame borders (or something) are still showing. This is quite obvious if you make a completely black track info. Other full screen views seem fine.
B11. F2, and click twice to edit, don't work on the second of a two monitor system if the second monitor is to the left or above monitor 1. If MC is on monitor 1, hitting F2 will put me in edit mode, on monitor 2, F2 is ignored. F2 works normally in other applications under these conditions.
B14. Properties window will show properties from the last selection set while in a completely unrelated area (Wed Media, TV, Start, etc.).
B15. Can't use backspace or delete when editing a smartlist by typing when using MC on a second monitor when the second monitor is to the left or above monitor 1.

Ah, I figured it out. *Somehow* the original jpg has a Modified Date of Sunday, April 13, 22223, 7:16:56 PM. This seems to be valid on Windows XP, though how the heck it got /that/ date, I have no idea. Oh well, chock it up to the strange and unexplained and we'll move on. But just know that in the year 22223, you're going to get another bug report from me. ;)

TOOLBAR PROPERTIES BUTTON doesn't work
Try this - Have Playing Now open in the Action Window.
Then select a few tracks in the tracks area (not the Action Window playing now)
Then select the Properties button on the toolbar.
The action window mimimizes - no properties are displayed.
Select the Properties button on the toolbar again, the Action Window comes back, still in Playing Now.
The toolbar properties button does not bring up properties. It only seems to toggle the Action Window on or off.
-
Bug:
in order to type a keyword in the search bar edit box you have to edit it while you're playing the media library.
-
What's this house icon on the bottom of my screen? Having the action window showing when first installing would give the person an idea what that is.
Playlist or smartlist in a view scheme takes a long time (5-10 mins) to show anything. Viewing same files in the playlist tree is almost instant.
Rating is gone.
Rating column doesn't update when moving mouse off window (first column). Mouse isn't moving over correct star (off by 1).
Action window flickers when importing because it seems to update on every file (slow).
Action window and playnig now doesn't update screen when changing files.
Option window scrollbar flickers when moving.
Scrollbar size is not using windows metrics. Unable to use it when the scrollbar is about a 1mm wide. Never had this problem when skins were disabled.
Icons in the action window are fuzzy/distorted. Playing Now and Playlists icons are reversed.
Mute / Sound Waves for the volume are reversed. Right click on volume slider doesn't mute.
Playing images and video at the same time is not a good thing. Videos seem to show first regardless of the image file I double-clicked.

Bugs:
1. Pressing the Tab key in File Properties fields is wacked!! You have to press Tab twice to get to the next field...never seen a UI implemented that way and it is really quite annoying.

Bugs:
1. Pressing the Tab key in File Properties fields is wacked!! You have to press Tab twice to get to the next field
That bug has been around a while. Seems intermittent to me. I "think" it takes 2 tabs when the update is not done.
I've been meaning to report it, but had not got around to it, glad you did it.

On my system, the volume and time controls are getting cropped a little at the bottom -- there isn't enough space between them and what gets drawn underneath -- here's a picture:

Can someone else check for the "missing artist field" bug I'm getting when synching my iPod? When I synch, the "artist" is missing from the songs transferred to the iPod. I can check this on the iPod itself, or by looking at the iPod's song list from within MC. The "artist" column is completely blank when the iPod is selected in the tree.
The same mp3's transfer normally (i.e. the artist field is still there) when using Ephpod.
Thanks,
Larry

Hi,
If I try and create a playlist from the action window, using file properties and playlists and then click on playlsit tools, create playlists, MC crashes. This has happened 3 times now. It is fine from the tree view.
I have win2000 professional

Hi,
I just transferred an album to the ipod and the artist field is complete. No problems.

RECENTLY IMPORTED - ACTION WINDOW - WEIRDNESS
I imported a set of tracks.
I clicked on the toolbar buttonk "Recently Imported"
The undocked Action Window popped up in "Recently Imported". That was fairly useless, since the reason one selects Recently Imported is usually to then select properties.
So I tried to close the undocked Action Window. Nothing, MC was totally locked up. No response anywhere. I had to kill the process.
I restarted MC then clicked the toolbar button Recently Imported again, this time it showed the recently imported tracks like normal in the track area display.
I can't see a reason for the Recently Imported button to ever display in the Action Window anyway, but it happened, locked up the program and after a restart worked as I expected it to.
---------------------
I just imported a few more tracks, as soon as I clicked Okay after the import, this time the Action Window popped up by itself in Recently Imported and again, locked up MC and I had to kill the program.
I think the Action Window should stay out of my way, unless I specifically ask for it, and it should always stay in the mode I left it in, until I tell MC to change the mode.
Right now, the Action Window, just seems like more clicking to get things done.
-
Small thing - but every time I open MC - the tree is fully closed - is there any way it can just re-open to how I had it last time?
It's not a big deal, but if it could be done easily it would make it a lot nicer :)
Thanks

I can't believe this action homepage is even being entertained. It's not intuitive and it add's more mouse clicks. Don't get me wrong, I think the action space for Playing Now and Properties etc is excellent, it's the implementation which is off (IMHO.) Left click on the 'Home' and 'Action Picker' bring complex, unclear items. Right Click on current action section is the same (no Clear Playing Now in Playing Now.)
I think there are much better alternatives, such as the one here: http://www.futurehome.de/mc/split_view.htm.
I know you said that this is too much for the 9.1 release, but the basic concepts are very simlar.
Even if you don't use all his ideas, the fact that there is a permanently visible button to select each page, IMO, is essential. Alternatively, put them all back as toolbar buttons that pop-up in the 'Action' space.
Regards
Vic

On my system, the volume and time controls are getting cropped a little at the bottom ...
Your font size is too big for the PixOS skin... you will have to select 8 or 9 point to see everything placed right...
Maybe there will be skin tweaks for bigger font sizes someday...
-
Just a couple of observations from build 232. Sorry if they've been fixed in 233 but I haven't been able to DL that yet.
1. An old bug has resurfaced whereby you cannot display the action window using the toolbar button if no files are selected.
2. Thanks for listing playlist tracks in the action window. Just one problem - if you try to drag and drop from here and into playing now (which seems like a logical thing to do) it doesn't work. In fact the currently playing track is duplicated in playing now.
-
A very minor issue with 'Artist Info'...
If you click on 'Artist Info' you get information about the current artist - fine :)
If you then click on it again, nothing appears to happen....
If the track finishes, and a new track from a new artist starts playing, then the 'refresh' button (top right) refreshes the displayed information about the previous track - also fine :)
However, the 'Artist Info' button, if pressed again still seems to do nothing ?
If you click on 'Playing Now' and then 'Artist Info' again, then the information is updated to the current artist.
Should this not happen just on a single click of the 'Artist Info'?

Request:
1. Can the new Action thing have forward and backward navigation arrows so I/we can quickly move back and forth between 'actions/navigations' we recently used?
2. Better yet, navigation arrows like IE where you also have a dropdown list of recent navigations (webpages in IE) that you can quickly return too)...so, Recently Used support (basically).

CONFIRMED, DUPLICATABLE BUGS/ISSUES ON MY SYSTEM:
1. In 'hairstyle' mode, when selecting a TV channel it plays channel 'n/a'. Trying to change channels in the lower menu bar switches between the last channel in my tuner list and channel 'n/a', regardless of which channel I had selected. I have to right-click the display and manually select a channel there to reset the tuner. After this, everything functions normally until I try again from hairstyle. This doesn't happen when starting TV in Mega-Me.
2. Music crossfading is not functioning correctly in ASIO mode. Song 1 fades out, but song 2 just abruptly starts as if set for gapless playing. On some occasion, it will crossfade somewhat, but only about 1-2 seconds. Oddly this does not happen if you double-click another file in the playlist: this will usually crossfade just fine. Confirmed this in multiple formats.
3. When a music CD is inserted with Audio CD action set to 'play' (while MC is running), it will instead play whatever is selected currently in panes view, replacing the current playlist. If Rip is selected manually, functioning occurs as expected.
4. When inserting an Audio CD with Media Center NOT running and selecting the option to 'Play CD using Media Center' in the resulting popup dialog (WinXP), if MC is set 'rip' by deafult in options it will autorip CD instead of playing CD, regardless of setting to ask first. If 'Play' or 'Nothing' are selected it will play the CD normally; however, 'ask first' setting is still ignored. Perhaps a DDE issue? Don't have a Win2k or 9x box to test.
5. 'Enable Startup Volume' option isn't functioning correctly (actually, beyond setting wave/mp3 to max, it doesn't function at all). I am using Creative Sound Mixer v3.00.57 (w/ Theme Engine v1.00.54) instead of Windows' CPL if it makes any difference, but I duplicated the behavior without Creative software running. Happens in ASIO and Direct Sound modes.
6. Streaming mp3 audio via http crashes media core, leaving a sound fragment in the audio buffer repeating in an endless loop. Example url is http://www.live365.com/play/265066 -- Also happens when playing MIDI files through HTTP, albeit inconsistently. I have noticed that while playing audio media locally and selecting another file to play while one is still in progress, the currently playing audio will quickly loop while the next song is buffering (only for about 1 second, but very noticeable). Could this issue be caused by code responsible for buffering audio over http crashing the process and leaving the sound fragment in the audio buffer uncleared? Just a thought.
7. Some corrupted mp3 headers are causing MC to crash to desktop. Hasn't happened in other formats yet. UPDATE: King Sparta pointed out that mono channeled mp3 audio files were crashing, and I believe the files causing the crash were mono on mine as well. Properties in MC library are not filling in either, as if the file were corrupted, perhaps this was the reason for my first perception. Also, MC does not crash to desktop any longer, merely crashes with error dialog; however, one still gets the annoying audio buffer loop.
8. Some of my VBR mp3's are being shown as 32kbps bitrate and about 7 times the length in time. Not sure if this was from encoding or MC's decoding. Files play fine, but cause false alarms with CD times when writing CDs, requiring manual length calculation. Anyone else seeing this?
FEATURE REQUESTS/OPTIMIZATIONS:
1. In the filelist pane, the last field on the right (filename by default) always runs off the right side of the pane. Trying to expand the width of the field with the mouse to read the entire field is a pain, for it only widens a few pixels at a time.
2. When inserting bitrate info into filename during CD ripping, it inserts 1440 from the CD source. Is there any way to have it insert the final compressed bitrate? There are some cases where this is handy (ripping to ogg instead of ape) and it saves having to retag a CD.
3. When selecting a TV channel, MC adds all channels to the 'Playing Now' list. If one then opens any media file out of Windows Explorer, it appends the file to the end of the TV channels in playing now, after which it will bounce back up to the top and try playing TV channels. Any way to change this behavior? Perhaps clear the play list when TV is stopped?
SUNDRIES NEEDING ATTENTION AT SOME POINT:
1. Splash screen still reads 9.0 :P

Cross fade is working fine here. Set to smooth 5s. Track1 fades down and track 2 fades up like it should. I am using Direct Sound - Soundblaster Live Player 1024 Soundcard, Creative drivers...
Anyone else getting the scrolling behaviour in the add rule dialog boxes as seen in my video posted above??
Adam
-
Thanks NoCodeUk, even if it isn't the answer I was looking for. I'd have returned the favour but I can't run that file.
Any chance you can give xfade another try with the setting at full 16 secs. If it's working properly you should really notice at that setting. I only say that 'cos I do get a little crossfade - just not much at all.
-
I think I got something on the xfade problem. In DSP I unchecked Output format. That didn't work but I thought I'd mention it in case it was needed in conjunction with the next bit that DID work.
I turned off clip protection and now Xfade is working again.
A bug me thinks...
-
I always have clip protection turned off anyway and I found xfade does not work at the full 16 seconds when tracks run together it only works when I use the forward and back buttons. Definitely a bug but I am not sure if the clip protections linked as I always have this off...
To get my video to work you have to copy the URL into your browser and run as my server does not allow external linking...
Adam
-
A few more tests with every combination of Output Source checked/unchecked and Clip protection on/off reveal there is a definite problem though it's unclear which setting it's down to. It'll now work with Clip on/off as long as output source is switched off which contradicts my first result. Before you say Jim, I know I should start another thread for this but I did that once and no-one responded with any help.
I don't propose doing any more tests on this (unless you ask me to). I just hope you guys isolate the cause and resolve it. I'll help in any way I can. For info my output source settings were:
Bitdepth - Source Bitdepth
Channels - Source number of channels
Sample rate - 96K.
Digital Rogue - Can you add anything to this?
-
I just tried with output format turned off and it worked. I think this is the sucker causing the problems. And I had everything set to the defaults so having it turned off wont affect me but I wouldn't have thought having it on at the defaults would have either ;D
Adam
-
Thanks for your help Adam. Let's hope they can fix it. Unfortunately I still can't play your file as IE gives me this message and unfortunately the advice in the message doesn't work for me. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/support/mperr.asp?prd=Windows&spb=MediaPlayer&pver=9.0.0.3008&os=WinNT&over=5.1.2600&olcid=0x809&clcid=0x809&id=C00D1197
It's not down to the skin is it? Have you got latest drivers for your video card? I don't get any scrolling problem when adding a rule for a view scheme or in the search bar. Hope you get it sorted.
-
Thanks for trying. I get this with every skin...I have the latest catalyst drivers for my video card. If anyone else was getting it we could probably narrow it down and get it sorted but if its just me :(
I wonder if it is a mouse driver issue rather than video card...probably not.
Adam

well, I get fairly consistent results as both of you. I don't use the JRSS portion of the output panel, for I'd rather leave that to my soundcard driver to handle natively. If I run in Direct Sound, with no ouput formatting, everything is fine; however, in ASIO mode I have to use output formatting to change the output into 24bit/48Khz for it to work, and that is where things blow up on me. If I turn off 24bit output and leave it at source bitrate and run 48khz samping rate only (necessary for ASIO to function) things work a little better, but I cannot achieve much crossfading. It is more like one song fades out then the other fades in. Hey, I have fading now, just no cross... lol :D
update: turning off clip handling seems to allow 1 or 2 seconds of crossfading, but not much more than that.

Okay, I'm still playing with the panes (I really want to like them, so I use them so they are not "foreign" to me).
Sometimes when I right click on an album and select play or add to playing now, the undocked PlayingNow Action Window pops up. Other times it does not. I don't want it to. I have yet to figure out a pattern at to when it does and when it does not pop up.
(I remember a George Carlin skit years ago. He was talking about his little poodle jumping from the floor to the bed. He'd put the dog back down and let it jump backup over and over again until it was too tired to jump any longer. George Carlin said "Good, now if I want you up on the bed, I'll put you on the bed.)

While ripping a CD, the main MC window pops to the front of all the windows I'm working on to update the "Recently Ripped" section of the bottom-left panel every time a track finishes ripping.
Personally, I'd rather have it do the whole CD in the background, as I'd imagine most others would too.
Overall, new features are lookin' pretty swell.
Thanks,
Dan "da Man"

Your font size is too big for the PixOS skin... you will have to select 8 or 9 point to see everything placed right...
Maybe there will be skin tweaks for bigger font sizes someday...
Thanks for the suggestion but I've modified nothing regarding my system fonts. This is something that used to look ok in MC prior to the last few builds.
I'll be darned if I change my system fonts for a music jukebox. Don't mean to sound rude but MC should look fine just like the dozens of other apps I work with everyday.

This is so very minor, but when you maximize MC, the center button (the green button in the top right corner with the PixOS skin) doesn't change. Doesn't change to the "Restore Down" button like it should.
May be skin related, I'm not sure
I reported this for 232. It's not skin related.

Output File Location (ripping & recording) doesn't appear to have an option to disable the Directory Rule...
I see that Mr. Rightclick has returned to the fray.
Lurve the Action Window.....and the Panes

When viewing a playlist or the files in playing now - it's impossible to tell what type of file they are - theres no icon or any other indication of the file type of the files listed there :(
-
If Clean File Properties is used on a song with no year filled, it fills in 1899 in the year field ?
-
A couple of observations with 233 (my apologies if I'm being redundant):
Action Pane:
1. It is useful when building playlists to see the list as it progresses.
2. It would be nice if you could resize the pane.
3. As it is now, once the playlist gets "long enough" the pane constantly refocuses to the top. It is a pain ;) to have to use the slider after every entry to stay focused at the bottom.
4. Drag and drop docking/undocking would be nice.
5. Back/Forward arrows (previously mentioned) would help navigation.
6. Right now it seems there are "too many" clicks to get to where you want to be.
7. All in all, it's a great idea and has great potential.
Problem:
1. Drag and drop in the playing now pane (it's the only one I was using) does not work all of the time. Sometimes the cursor will "grap" the object and allow movement and other times I have to try to "grab" the object several times before it will move.

This version now locks up MC everytime I import anything.
I import and when it's done, the undocked Recently Imported window pops up (for unknown reasons) and them MC is locked. I must kill the process. A few days ago, this happened, but the tracks were imported, now when I run MC again, the tracks are not there.

Small Bug:
If you type in to the search box enough for it to 'push out' and resizes bigger (lovely feature btw), and then delete the characters to it so it goes smaller, you get a 'trail' of the window.
For a screeny of this;

Making a selection of files using CTRL+SHIFT doesn't update views in the action window (e.g. statistics, properties) and doesn't recognise more than the first file is selected - e.g. if you select say 5 files using the CTRL+SHIFT method then change a property, only the first is updated.
If you then however select a 6th file using just CTRL, then it updates the views for all 6 files.
Hope that makes sense :)

Bug
If you right click in Windows Explorer and Media Centre>Play. It adds all tracks to playing now rather than replacing playing now.

I'm having trouble ripping in digital secure mode. I downloaded verison 9.0 a couple of days ago (trial copy, just got an iPod and MC9 comes very highly recommended by the folks at iPodlounge), and everything seems good. I downloaded the beta 9.1.233, figuring I'd take a look at the upcoming version and the volume leveling feature.
Whereas 9.0 worked just fine, 9.1.233 always gives me an error when ripping CDs. The "cdripper" dialog box pops up with the message "Error in input file."
The resultant ripped file only contains data for the end of the track (basically it seems like whatever was read after the last error dialog). If I switch back to 9.0, it works just fine.
Is this a problem, or is it perhaps the beta rejecting me because I'm not a licensed user?
Thanks...

How is the work in the next build guys..
i cant wait to see the new tree view replacement :)
well if so .. i have a requist which is supplying the changes happened to main.xml file for non-confusion..
thanks again.

Er... Why do you think this is a bug? ?
I, for one, would be rather peeved if MC cleared my playlist every time I played a track externally. For one thing, it would remove the ability to play multiple tracks from different directories. Think about it. ;)
Omni
Err - Why isn't it a bug? This is a media centre specific menu item in explorer and under it there are the options 'Play' or 'Add to playing now'. These are meant to behave as they do in the application. Try right clicking on a track in the library and hitting 'play' and tell me what you expect to happen?
It's a bug.
-
Just thought I'd confirm that the following two things are working great as of 9.1.233 (they didn't work in some earlier builds):
- right-clicking on music files in the right pane displays the pop-up menu
- auto smartlists are working
Hooray for the MC design team!
I looked at many different media organizer/players, and MC is by far the best!

I respectfully disagree.
So if the menu item 'Play' is supposed to add tracks to playing now what exactly is the purpose of the next menu item - 'Add to playing now'. Think about it!

Please move the discussion to a new thread. We try to keep this one for bugs and it gets hard to read if there is much discussion.

How do I disable the Action <whatever> window from auto-tracking to my last action?
I want to leave File Properties displayed, but it keeps changing to another view everytime I do something (like add to Playing Now, import files, etc.).
-
I just noticed, when I go from a window without panes (i.e.: 'Recently Imported') back to 'Media Library', the panes do not return unless manually opened.
If you click on the 'little arrows' on the divider bar, it will snap back to the last position (thanks for fixing that) . . . .
. . . BUT shouldn't it be 'sticky' and auto-return when you go back to 'Media Library'?
I think so anyway.

Bugs:
1. Still now way to turn off (use none) the Directory Rule when ripping (under Options > File Locations). This has been broke in all 9.1 releases...I don't want MC to create directories when ripping. 9.0 and prior MJs did not force you to use directories.
2. Action Window auto-changes and there seems to be no way to make it fixed (stay on whatever window I choose).

Import Media From Read-Only Share Doesn't Load Tags
It would appear that with 9.1.233 (I think it's new to that build) if you import media from a network share to which you have only read-only access that none of the tags in those files are imported. This is unfortunate - I have MC on a couple of different PCs all pointed at the same share full of music and yet want to ensure that only from "my" PC can any real changes be made.
-
startup screen still 9.0 :)

The CD Rip progress window keeps popping behind the main MC window when it starts to rip each new song -- i.e. I bring the progress window to the front in order to keep an eye on the progress, but as soon as the next song starts it pops behind the main MC window again. The only way to watch the progress is to minimize the main MC window so that the CD Rip window is always visible.
