Title: More w00t...
Post by: Matt on July 18, 2003, 01:13:07 pm
There's an update version of the 3D visualizations available here:

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/vis_3D.mjp

Remember to right-click when they're running to change things.

To use your images in "Picture Cube" and "Picture Terrain":

1) start playing some music in MC
2) pick some images and play them (so they're playing at the same time as the music)
3) switch to 3D visualizations -- the images from (2) will be used

Each time a song changes new images will get used.  Using pictures of faces with "Picture Terrain" is not advised.

aww,

I'm getting:

error starting 3D visualisations
(error finding compatible stencil buffer format).

I have a Matrox G400 Max dual head (love the two monitors - thanks for the support for it - JUST discovered that I could be browsing the library in one and having the video/image etc playing in the other one - LOVELY!!)
I have the LATEST drivers for it.

It won't work with all hardware.  Your video card needs to support Windowed mode and an acceptable stencil buffer format.  Some cards won't work -- even with the latest drivers.

Not working On My ATI 9700

it seems when you swich to tunnel it is going, but slows down and stops.

none of the selections seem to work correctly, and they did with the orginal MC9 and the first alphas of the 3d visual.

Are they supposed to move?

Picture terrain rotates a little bit, but the terrain doesn't change.

And the picture cube seems to pause for long periods of time.

Actually a lot of them do.

I'm assuming this is a bug. So judging on pure potential... this is pretty darn cool. :)

Doof,
Right click and try setting some of the options.  Speed, etc.  Something isn't getting set right, I think.

Very cool.  Nice work.  :)

I have an ATI A-I-W 8500DV.  It seems to work generally well on my PC.

At normal speed, the tunnel zips along fine, and hesitates briefly every few seconds - but not enough for it to be a big deal.  When I change the speed to fastest, it stops a lot.

The fly-by on the terrain is jerky and stops a lot.

At one point, the spectrum analyzer turned into what looked like a gray suspension bridge looking down from the top.  Gray cables going down to a granite strip.  Jerky movement, with an occasional small flash of the MC logo.  I switched visualizations and back, and it reverted to normal.

Some subjective comments:

The granite floors on dot fountain and spectrum analyzer look awesome.  Nice reflections.

I love the tunnel and the spectrum analyzer.

On some of the visualizations, it feels like there's a lot going on that is not really connected to the music.  The camera movement, the spinning of the cube, the balls bouncing; they all seem to happen independent of what's playing - at least as far as I can tell.

Aside from the tunnel, it doesn't look good when you move the camera.  I suggest the camera stay fixed; and spin, bounce, or mutate the objects in front of the camera.

Images (whether the MC logo or an album cover) look great on the cube, but don't look good as a floor, a terrain, a wallpaper without a visible edge, or on tiny balls.  They're fine as a wallpaper above the granite floor.

Some other ideas, in case you're looking for them:

Convert the basic visualizations to 3D
- View the classic spectrum analyzer at an angle in 3D, showing 3D columns going up and down.
- Map the Oscilloscope onto a spinning globe along its equator.
- Map the Oscilloscope onto a spinning cube, perhaps having different styles on each face
- Perhaps create spinning cube versions of all the visualizations and trackinfo pages.

I can imagine one other moving camera view that might work... flying over an infinite terrain, like you do in the tunnel.  I wouldn't like it, but I think it'd be pretty popular.  ;)

The tunnel could look better with something other than the MC logo... various color gradients, or stripes or other patterns.

Bubbles.  :)

Sam,
Thanks for the ideas.  The tunnel should have whatever image is current.  If the music has cover art, for example, you should get sick looking at it while flying through the tunnel.

Terrain: terrain doesn't change, animation stops for a few seconds every few seconds.

Particle creation: seems fine.

Spectrum analyzer: seems fine.

Starscope: no textures or lighting on star, just black. BG seems fine.

Text: same as Starscope, and animation stops for a few seconds every few seconds.

Picture cube: not really a cube, but that's cool. seems fine.

Tunnel: scary fast. seems fine.

Oscilloscope: same as Starscope.

Matt,

Hats off...  it's things like this that make MC a step above the rest!

I've had little luck getting it to work though.  Often times, there are plenty of images available in the "images" visualization, but when I switch to 3Dvis, they all disappear - leaving the 3Dvis to work of the MC logo.  Once or twice, I have limited success (I can't find a pattern) with the cube, but others are all white.  And once, I get a Media Core crash.

This is working pretty well for me, and the picture cube is great for photos.

I get slight stuttering as reports by others occasionally, and most noticeably with the tunnel I think.

Also occasionally with the text preset the text is not skinned with the cover art, but a uniform colour, which renders it a bit of an amorphous blob.

The tunnel is really sick, and should come with a health warning :) Id also like to see it change with the current slideshow image if possible, and perhaps speed up and slow down occasionally - anything to make it bearable for more than 30 seconds.

OK...  so what am I doing wrong?  When I add the images, the visualization is set to "Images".  Changing visualizations clears the images and I'm left with the default MC logo for the 3Dvis.

This is very cool and works sweet on my Radeon 7200.  However I have noticed a bug and it links in with an olod MC bug which I am not sure if I have reported befor or not.  Start 3D Vis, switch to Windowed view, MC spawns the window and it has a title in XP task bar, now siwtch back to internal, cycle through MCs vis alternatives, when returning to 3D vis it says "error starting 3d visualisations, (error creating Direct 3D device).  Happens everytime.  Where it lins to an MC bug is that after going into windowed mode and back, the task bar always still has a button for Media Center Display.  I am guessing XP thinks the D3D output is still open in this window and cannot create another one.  The only way to get the vis back is to reset MC then reload and all is fine.

EDIT: This also materialises if you try to change the image list.

Works great. Has defnite potential. And for the record, I'm in the camp that places a lot of value on visualizations. And let's just say it's a good thing MC has such good library managment capablities :-) .

And as a postscript, if you want a great exhibit of this Geiss guy's aptitude, don't even mess with WinAmp. Just install Dremple and run it as your desktop wallpaper. You might want to take a Dramamine or two first.

It's possible some older cards won't be able to do mixed 2D / 3D like MC uses.
