Title: Could Media Center change its icon?
Post by: redonion on June 20, 2016, 04:50:14 am
At present, Media Center is represented by a generic white circle with a blue circle with in the center with  an arrow pointing to the right.

I'm sure the folks at JRiver thought long and hard about this design, however, it blends in strongly with icons for Internet Explorer, or Microsoft Edge, or KeePass, or Mailwasher, or any other of a number of apps with a circular icon.

Why not change the Media Center icon to something uniquely and easily identifiable such as a treble clef symbol?

This would be unique to JR MC so far as I know, and I formally waive my rights to this idea so long as I am not banned from this forum.  What does the forum have to say about this?

I personally have no issues with the current program icon. My only request would be to have the file type information actually display the actual type of media file rather than the generic "Media Center file" description for everything. It's been requested before I'm sure, why cant it say FLAC, MP3, MKV etc.

The icon looks fine to me, IMO.

You can change the Icon if you so desire!

I like the icon myself....just wish we had different colors to choose from and maybe the #version of MC would be nice...like 19,20,21,22

Personally I find the icon to be unique and recognisable at a glance. Certainly nothing like Internet Explorer or Edge, which aren't even complete circles. The Chrome icon is closer, since it is a complete circle.

Look at the large version at the top of this forum. Completely different. Plus why would JRiver change their icon in favour of KeePass or Mailwasher, of all things? No. Bad idea.

So, edit up an image however you like, and use that for the MC icon on your system.

I like it because I use a circular icon theme on Linux (all icons are circular), so even though MC isn't quite popular enough on Linux to get a custom circle icon, it blends right in  ;D

I agree, having a generic description for all supported file types breaks windows functionality (if JRiver is the defaut program), try and sort files by type in windows explorer.

I don't like the crummy icon that Microsoft uses for Word

I wonder if they would consider changing it .....

OK!  Fair enough!

I just thought that JRiver seems to be so configurable in every other aspect it could perhaps allow for configuring its icon.

As I pretty much use JRiver for audio playback, I thought a treble clef sign would be a pretty icon for the application.

I will admit that my idea was unpopular.

Of course, that does not mean it was wrong.

I guess I'm just looking for reasons to bother to upgrading to JRiver Next when it has so obviously become a video program.

If, as an audio user, upgrading to JRiver Next brings nothing to the table, not even an icon in the taskbar, what is the point in doing so?

JRiver's problem is that they have gotten so good at what the are doing in audio, it's hard to tell when to upgrade.

As mentioned above, you can change the icon to whatever you like yourself.

I strongly agree here (should be a request for MC22!):
My only request would be to have the file type information actually display the actual type of media file rather than the generic "Media Center file" description for everything.

I absolutely don't agree with the suggestion on changing the icon. I remember back the times where MC was called MJ and had some kind of a dancing jukebox as icon. It already looked outdated to me the time I first I tried MJ. When JRiver took the step to add support for TV and video the name as well as the icon had to change because MJ was not a music only application any more. I loved the new icon at the first glance and still do (even if it could be a bit more metro/material ;)). It represents in a perfect manner the thing we all love MC for: it plays all kind of playable stuff.

A treble clef, as suggested, wouldn't. Because it's audio only.

Current icon is excellent.  Classic design, that do not look old or passé every few years, and convey very well that it is a media player.
Since the icon can be changed by the user, this is a non issue...
