Title: Uninstall older versions of MC (problem)
Post by: AndrewFG on July 19, 2016, 06:59:48 am
This is probably in the wrong forum, so please feel free to move it elsewhere..

I just installed MC22 on my operational HTPC, and I feel confident enough about its stability, to clean up (uninstall) all the older versions of MC on this machine. I had versions of MC back as far as MC16, and for all versions except MC17 the MC uninstaller program worked just fine. However the MC17 uninstaller crashes with an error concerning a problem with some MC DLL. As I had upgraded to Windows 10, I tried running the MC17 uninstaller in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode, but without success. And "Run As Administrator" failed as well..

Any suggestions how to uninstall MC17 ??

(Note: just deleting the files is not enough for me; I want to clean up the Registry entries as well...)

Try installing MC17 again, and uninstalling it after.

Just my 2 cents:

For me every prior version of MC, starting with 16, (except MC21) required that after an upgrade to a new MC version, I had to reinstall the old version in order to use the "uninstall tool".

However with MC21 (I just upgraded to MC22) I did not need to do this extra step. So either congrats to JRiver for fixing the uninstall, or maybe congrats to Win10. Either way the uninstall works great now.

Thanks Hendrik. I tried that too, and got the same error message (see attachment).

I had the exact same problem on Windows 10 but I deleted MC21 folder manually.

Yeah. It's too difficult to waste time doing it right. So I also just deleted the whole folder, and the whole registry tree using Regedit. There is probably still other stuff left littering, but life is too short...

FWIW, I have a customer who is encountering the same problem.

As far as I know, there was only one version that had a problem.  It was 17 or 18, I believe.  It was fixed quickly, but there are still people running it.

The solution is to go to "Old Versions" on our wiki, and get the latest build of whatever version you're running.  Install it and then it will uninstall.

It was MC17.

I did that. And it doesn't work.

But anyway I force deleted all the files now, so I am not going back to try it again...

Speaking about installation/uninstallation: I am about to switch from MC20 to MC22 (under Windows). Can I directly update to MC22, or do I have to install an intermediate MC21 first, as for previous versions?

Regards
CM

You should be able to straight upgrade, though I recommend making a library backup first.

Thanks, Jim. We tried exactly that, and it did not work. The next step is a total reformatting and installation of Windows 10 again.

That's a drastic "next step" why not just leave the old MCxx installed and move on with MC22? Or is there a bigger issue?

I mean that that is the next step for us given our circumstances. It may or may not be the next logical incremental step in fixing the issue.
The customer will lose no data, and I will not have to spend needless hours trying to satisfy the customer that MC 17 is indeed gone form his system.

There's no harm in leaving MC17 there.

I understand, but must do what the customer wants, not what I think is easiest.

Sometimes you need to tell the customer what they want.

In this case, I am telling him he wants a reformat.
