We discussed this as a "coming feature" quite some time ago. I opened a thread back then about trying to watch non-anamorphic DVD rips so that they wouldn't be displayed very small in the center of the screen:

I'm hoping this feature is still on the list of things to come. Any idea when or if this feature will get put into the Mac video player?
