Title: Advice on transition MC21-->MC22 (not fully automatic)
Post by: rudyrednose on September 07, 2016, 12:10:03 pm
Greetings,

I generally wait stable status before updating MC major versions.  Now's the time...

I have one MC server and multiple JRiver clients.
Typically, update is a breeze.

However, this year, I do not want a fully automatic update, with MC22 taking all parameters from MC21.

I would like to completely redo my television setup from scratch (OTA ATSC, TV guide from zaptv through zap2xml.exe, OTA from 3 HDHomeruns HDHR4 units).

At the same time, I want to backup and restore my library, as I do not want to re-import and loose [Date Imported], [Last Played]¸ and % viewed on videos.

Suggestions on best way to proceed ?

Doesn't restore library (but not settings) work?

I've never restored without settings but the option is there...

How can I install MC22 without it automatically picking up MC21 config and libraries ?
Don't want to first remove everything MC21...

You could uninstall MC21 first. There is a choice during the uninstall:
1. Remove Registry Entries (removes custom settings, plug-ins and Media Editor settings).
2. Remove Library Files (will remove the library files but not the content files). Don't select if you are upgrading to a newer version.

If you choose 2, then you could install MC22 and start from scratch.

Thank you.

So I cannot do a clean install of MC22 without scrapping my MC21 config ?

What about cheating ?
- temporary rename of C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 21
- temporary rename of C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 21
- clean install of MC22
- rename back the two folders

Of course this would not address what is in the Registry...

Could this work ?

Obviously I want the option to keep my server's MC21 operational as long as I am not totally committed to MC22...

Cheers

Didn't do this myself this time but this should work as I've done it in the past.  But come to think of it if it sees MC21 it will import its settings during the install...
That would be nice to have a prompt during the install to NOT import settings from a previous version.

As an FYI I just upgraded to 22 and all my TV stuff worked flawlessly right from the start.  I just made sure MC21 wasn't running (and closed the server) before the install.

Any particular reason why you want to start from scratch? That could take a while....

For a while now, the automatic launch of zap2xml.exe fails due to some access rights failure.  The stange thing is that if I open a Dos box and run the same line, it works.  Then immediately after, I can manually load the guide without issue  ?

As I knew I would upgrade to MC22, I never put efforts into debugging, just do the manual stuff every 3-4 days.

And starting from a blank slate will probably result in a cleaner overall installation.  I experienced a lot over the years and could shed excess baggage in my setup.  Don't mind rebuilding some views...

So my original question remains.   That or the folder renaming cheat I mentioned.
Any input on those is welcome !

Is your zap2xml.exe  in the exclusion list of your antivirus if you have one?
if it's in C:\Program Files   I would take it out of there and put it where you have your media files and exclude this folder in your antivirus.
that's what I did with mc2xml.exe and it's been working great!  zap2xml is from the same guy.
