Title: MC22 on Raspberry - Sound quality
Post by: Werner on September 17, 2016, 12:27:16 pm
My configuration: MC22 on Raspberry as server, MC22 on Mac as client, playback via Airplay with Airfoil.

I just played some files in this configuration and the sound was like a »Volksempfänger«. After this strange experience I stopped MC22 on Raspberry and started MC21. Then I started the same MC22 on the Mac and play the same file via Airplay aith Airfoil. The sound was much, much better, I’s say it was as good as it can be. This means, the files are OK. The single difference was: the server was once MC22 (very bad sound quality) and once MC21 (very good sound quality).

What can be the cause? And what can I do?
(I know, I can downgrade to MC21, but I didn’t pay for MC22 in order to stay with MC21.)

Check conversion settings on the server.

I don't understand. What and where are "conversion settings"? And what should I check?

May I hope to get an answer?

I presume Airfoil is capturing the output audio Stream from MC.  Compare the settings in Tools--> Options--> Audio between your MC21 and 22 setup.

There is no difference. And there is no difference in the AirFoil settings. The difference is just MC21 or MC22 on the raspberry. And of course a big difference in sound quality.

Disable the spectrum analyzer on MC 22? (right click on the Media Center 22 title)

Because you are using an MC client, the client may be converting to MP3.  In fact, I think that converting to MP3 is the default for clients.  So you'd definitely want to check that setting.

Tools > Options > Media Network > client options > audio conversion

The option is set to »never convert« as it was before. And this option doesn’t change on my Mac when I change on my Pi from MC21 to MC22. On fact nothing changes, only MC21 to MC22 and the loss of sound quality. I also don’t change my ears when I change the version on my Pi.

@Bob: The spectrum analyzer is disabled since I saw it first time.

I want to make sure I'm understanding this flow properly.

You are using MC on a Mac as as library server client to MC as a server on the Raspberry.
On the Mac you are then playing a file from the Mac GUI to the airfoil device?
(the zone for the airfoil appears on the Mac and you select that zone or right-click and send files to that zone)?
