"Playback Problem" dialog via WASAPI and DS
The same test via ASIO will crash MC!
I have a Tanly USB interface (XMOS)

What settings are you using when trying to mixdown to mono?
Brian.

Output Format: checked
Output Encoding: None
Sample Rate: No Change
Mixiing: No or JRSS
Bitstreaming: None

Ummm...how should that mix down to mono?
Brian.

No issue using a HT Omega sound card (ASIO/WASAPI/DS all good)
I tried an Intel NUC and it's HDMI audio did fine on direct sound, but not on WASAPI. Not a complete crash though, just the error dialog.
The setting for "mixing" didn't change the result for the above 2 systems.
So it's only the Tanly USB interface (8core xmos) that is able to crash 'n burn MC on mono. It's not worth investigating because your not going to find another Tanly user doing mono.

I guess it is this one
http://tanly-audio.blogspot.be/
Go to DSP Studio in JRiver and select in Output Format 1 channel (mono)
or use a filter in Parametric Equalizer to send the left front to the right front and connect only one speaker to the right output. This is a manual mixdown from 2 channels.
I know, it has nothing to do with equalizing but you can do it like that. I learned this over the years,
but DPS Studio and specially the PEQ (short for parametric equalizer) are amazing things in MediaCenter, you can do a lot more than EQing with those.
Have fun.

thank you Ninouchka!
That option works great
I'm messing with the tweeter placement in one horn speaker so I want all channels to go there. Things are confused further because Gustard DACs swap the L/R channel on DSD content that comes in over the IIS input. But I'm good now. Thanks for the tip.
