Title: How do library items acquire rating stars?
Post by: Anthony99 on November 18, 2016, 11:00:04 pm
I never assign ratings to music tracks in my library, but I notice that over time they acquire stars on their own. Some music tracks in my library have 4 or 5 stars, even though I do not actually recall playing them in MC since I ripped them from CD.

I ripped my library from my original CDs using dBpoweramp and I know they they did not have any stars when I imported them into Media Center. I only use Media Center (various versions from MC 20 onwards) to play music.

I am guessing there is a process that assigns stars to tracks based on how often they are played (a bit like Windows Media Player?), but this does not explain how tracks that I do not play or play rarely end up with 4 or 5 stars.

Can somebody explain how tracks are rated by Media Center? Also, is there a log I can view that shows how many times a library item has been played and when?

Ratings are a personal thing.

It works via user input.

Thank you for the response. Please note my original post: I never update ratings, yet my library acquires them. My question is how that could be happening.

I understand that ratings are personal and are assigned by the JRiver user. That is straightforward. What is striking to me is that music in my library has acquired stars when I do not update ratings. Therefore, if I do not add these ratings, could there be some other method by which they acquire ratings? For example, I mostly use JRemote to play music. Could JRemote be assigning ratings without me being aware of it?

I am hoping that somebody could answer the question: does JRiver allocate ratings at all? If not, and I do not, how might my music library be acquiring them?

I've never noticed ratings appearing without my intervention ... ever.

That includes audio and video.

 :o

For me, it's a mystery.

JRiver does not add ratings

I get unwanted ratings sometimes.  How? Because I accidentally click the stars in a view where I haven't hidden them.  Moving the mouse over a star is enough to rate the track!  I suspect You are doing the same thing.

This. The same thing happens to me sometimes, clicking around in main UI I sometimes accidentally click in a ratings field and it adds/changes my rating unintentionally. Sometimes I don't even notice I've done it.

If you have added tracks from another source other than a cd and those have ratings they would be absorbed by MC. Its easy to remove them using the built in smart lists or by removing them before import! Sometimes other ripping software will add ratings.

I've definitely imported tracks with Ratings in the tags from a variety of sources (I think even tracks purchased from Amazon).

You can inadvertently get ratings when dragging the position slider on JRemote on Android because it is too close to the rating stars.
