Title: Moving music - keeping library?
Post by: Marty3d on July 23, 2003, 07:24:32 am
I'm about to move my music folder to another drive and was wondering how I change the mapping in MC nowadays. At some point in MC9.0b I tried this, but then there was no option to change the stored paths, so I was forced to recreate the library.

Is this possible and in that case, how?

/Martin

Hm... looked around trying to change it for one file instead of the whole library. Nopes. You can't actually change (search/replace):
E:\My music2\Shocking Blue - Venus.mp3
F:\My music2\Shocking Blue - Venus.mp3

You can however change
E:\My music2\
F:\My music2\

and
Shocking Blue - Venus.mp3
Shocking Blue - Venus2.mp3

But why, mom, why?! Why can't full path + filename be changed?

Sorry, I must be REALLY tired!!!

If i use filename instead of filename (path) or (name), then it works!

SORRY!

Why don't you try drag and drop from within MC on the 'My Computer' part of the navigation tree? I believe it should at the same time move your files and update your library.

That might work... but I found out another issue:

Choosing Find/replace -> Filename (path) on the following:
E:\My music2\_Albums\666 - Paradoxx (1998)\
to
E:\My music\_Albums\666 - Paradoxx (1998)\

resulted in 0 replaced files. The path was copied from MC so it's 100% correct. What's up with that?

Do you have any ratings on your songs?  When you moved them, did you keep the ratings?

When I dragged and dropped them and when I search/replaced single files, my ratings were intact.

But still, how do you move a whole tree structure?

Have You tried Library Tools > Rename Files From Properties...

Actually, I looked at it and went away... Seems like you could do ALOT of damage there...

All I want to do is change the darn base path without messing things up!!!  :-/

Is it just me or are there actually no-one who knows how to do this?

Ok, I give you the essentials:
File structure:
E: (drive)
|
-- MUSIC (folder, contains single files)
  |
-- ARTIST (folders, x number of folders with 2 or more files in each folder)
  |
-- ALBUMS (folder, contains only albums)
         |
-- ARTIST - ALBUM (folders, contains full albums)

Got it? Ok, what I want to do is to MOVE the whole structure without the E: drive to another drive F:. Ah, and yes, I want to rename the MUSIC folder to MY MUSIC.

Has anyone done this in MC 9.1? Tell me how then, please!

What I really would like to do is to move the files in explorer and the update the paths in MC's DB (with a texteditors find/replace function if necessary). But I believe the database structure doesn't allow this :(

I've done this...in the same way as min221bbs suggested..."Rename File From Properties".  Didn't have a problem.

Fortunately for me, this was in the early days of converting my music so I only had 120 or tracks to re-rip if it had all gone horribly wrong so I could afford the risk.

Why not backup your library and try out with a single album and see how you get on ?

Any suggestions on how to set it up?

Ok, any ideas on why Find/Replace doesn't work?

Tried filename, filename (path) and filename (name)

Find:
E:\My music2\_Albums\666 - Paradoxx (1998)\
Replace:
F:\My music\_Albums\666 - Paradoxx (1998)\

Resulted in 0 results.

This is an extract from the help file:

Find and Replace

This is a quick way of editing your file tags. If, for example, you find that you have misspelled an artist name, you can easily replace the wrong name with the right one. This feature will find/replace the following fields: track name, artist, album, comment, genre, album artist, location, and the 3 custom fields.

You can also use this feature to rename a drive path. If you have moved all your files onto a new drive, or into a new folder, tell Media Center to search for the old folder name, and replace it with the new.

As someone said before (with less detail):
1) **** MAKE SURE MC IS STOPPED ***
2) Open My Computer within MC9
3) Expand your E: drive
4) Drag your Music folder from E: to F:
5) Right-Click on F:\Music, select 'Edit Selected Item', and rename it to My Music

Done...

This is what I did and it worked perfectly.

Thanks all! I'll try that.

But I believe there's a bug with the find/replace when using filename (and it's variations), so I'll post a new topic about that...

Cheers!
