Title: Android TV boxes
Post by: Slim_Fishguttz on January 19, 2017, 02:52:26 pm
How about Media Center software that runs on an Android TV box, e.g. Fire TV, NVIDIA Shield etc.?  As a coincidence, it could also run on an ODroid device and would be more straightforward than a Raspberry Pi.

JRemote is not compatible with Android TV.

It also forces a lot of unnecessary transcoding

only if your playing it to that device....I would not have a TV and listen to music through the tv speakers would you?

He said tv box not tv.
Trying to get good audio out of any TV is always difficult...

I am suggesting that an MC server be written to run on any android tv device, thereby forgoing the necessity of a PC, Mac, or NAS server transcoding.

If not a server, then an MC client.

Fire tv, Nvidia shield, or Roku seem to be the future way to access media.

JRemote has nothing to do with this and, yes, I'm talking about an android tv box, not a tv.  Who would suggest listening to music on tv speakers?

I have used Gizmo to play music/videos from my home networked MC PCs on my Android box.

Really!?  Great.  What Android box; Fire TV, NVIDIA, Roku, something else?  How does one do this?  Doesn't a piece of MC have to be on the box?

Thanks

I posted in the other thread as well, but since it is Android based, there is not MC direct option.  You can run Gizmo, JRemote, or EOS.  I have run Gizmo and EOS on a FireTV, and they both have their drawbacks.  If you search my posts, I'm fairly certain I posted about it a while back (possibly in the EOS thread).

The best option I've found is to run Kodi on Android, then use UPnP to view your Library through the MC server.  More info here:  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,101787.msg707720.html#msg707720

I think MC on Android is (was?) coming, but I don't know where it's at.

It would be so cool to have theater view on the shield, it definitely needs it, especially when all the other media centres already have Android apps, I hope it's not to far off.
