Title: Volume when adding to channels together
Post by: arrowc on April 10, 2017, 10:59:23 pm
In Parametric Equalizer I have "Add SL to RL" when both are playing the volume is higher, I thought two channels would be louder, normal?   But I read somewere that when you add channels you should lower the volume by 3 or 6 in both channels.
My question is if I put -6 in the gain is that the SL channel or both, and what is the suggested volume decrease?

Doing a -6 dB gain on the channel will make the results add up to 100% again, which is what you probably want.

It is -6 dB in both channels.

One can test for themselves in JRiver. Here I'm adding Left and Right to Center
Tools > Advanced Tools > Audio Calibration > Pink Noise in all channels
Parametric Equalizer > Mute (Center, Subwoofer, Surrounds)
Parametric Equalizer > Mix Channels > Copy Left to Center with -6 dB gain
Parametric Equalizer > Mix Channels > Add Left to Center with - 6 dB gain
Analyzer will show Left, Right, and Center all at the same levels.
