The soloist tag fills up fast and when attempting to type in a new one the list is off the screen. Is there a way to prevent the soloist field from creating a collection with a drop down list?

I can't reproduce what you seem to be describing.  Are you using the tagging window at full height?  Or do you have it shrunken down to half height?  I think I've seen a similar thing happen at half height.  If so, try it at full height.

I  tried to upload a picture but the system would not allow it; perhaps too large. I have been using the soloist at half-ht. I will use it at full ht. in the future. Thanks.
