Title: madVR version
Post by: cgh on June 21, 2017, 03:05:53 am
Hi, I installed version 23 and noticed that it is still using a version of madvr that is almost a year outdated. For instance it does not include The next generation upscaling (NGU) which is more efficient than NNEDI (faster at similar quality). Is there some way I can use the latest madvr with jriver 23? I noticed it is store in:
J River\Media Center 23\Plugins\madvr

Can I just replace the madvr folder with the latest version?

Thanks!

Yep.

But be warned, the version of madVR that's shipped with MC has been thoroughly tested and is considered stable, hence why it's seldomly updated to a newer madVR.

Ok, I did it and it works! Note though that we are talking about a year of Madvr optimizations and development. So while the outdated year old version has been thoroughly tested with JRiver, we are still missing out on some benefits of an updated madvr that includes a lot more options as well as more efficient upscaling (NGU). And who knows how many other improvements and optimizations? Are you saying that in an entire year of madvr development that there have not been any other "stable" madvr releases? Maybe its time to start "thoroughly testing" some later versions?

Thanks!

MC23 is still in a very early state, and there are a lot of things we still plan to do. We can't do everything at the same time. We will probably be updating madVR some time soon-ish.

If v23 is in early stages, why wouldn't you include a newer madVR with it? Your users will report any issues anyway.
The one that's included now, has terrible issues with HDR pass-through. So you could say MC23 has issues with HDR pass-through in windows 10.
Replacing the madVR folder is messy and it gets automatically replaced after a while.

I hope you guys consider upgrading madVR without much certification, since testing new versions must be really low in your list of priorities.

A new beta version of LAV version 0.70 was included in JRiver version 23. I doubt it's been thoroughly tested ;)

Nahhh I'm pretty sure that Hendrik (MC) and Nev (LAV) discuss stuff all the time.  ;D

The new NGU algorithms are really magical.

In germany you can download some of the public tv content. I got the new Helene Fischer Concert from Munich in 960x540.

On a 3k or 4k screen, it  looks really awful when using RO Standard.

Using the NGU algorithm it is not 4k quality, but it is really a miracle how the algorithm got it from awful to near 4k quality and if you like Helene you can enjoy her and her music in all her glory ;D

Hoping that MC23 will officially support the new madVR algorithms.

With the ongoing developments of GPUs and madVR, I think it might make sense to move the current ROHQ settings to "ROMQ" and experiment with using NGU for ROHQ.
