Can anyone please help I am using MJ8 and my system is running windows 98 se with 320mb but whenever I try to rip a CD to MP3 the computer just hangs or I get the dreaded blue screen with the message " A fatal exception OD has occurred at 0147:000061A0 your program will be terminated etc"
I have tried other software and still the same, I have even reformatted the drive and just put windows on and MJ8 but still no luck, this is really getting on my tits now. :-[

>> I have tried other software and still the same
well you know you can always install a copy of windows XP if you can get your hands on one, prior to you shooting your PC
if that does not work then tie a rope around your PC then tie it to your car and drive to best buy

That's a new one. I'm a bit confused about how that works... but I don't think I really want to know. ;D

Have you checked the MJ FAQ on the suggested CD-ROM settings? I also use Windows 98SE and have had issues with CD-ROM's. The problem you describe sounds something like an issue I resolved in the past with the help on the MJ FAQ.
Here's the info. Good luck.
---
If you are using MEDIA JUKEBOX under Win 95/98/NT, then you must make sure that the following settings are enabled/disabled for all CD-ROM readers and recorders on your system:
WINDOWS 95/98 DEVICE SETTINGS
1) Open the "Control Panel" folder and click on the ³System" icon.
2) Select the "Device Manager" tab.
3) Click on the CD-ROM icon.
4) For each CD-ROM device in the list:
Select the device.
Select the "Settings" tab.
Enable the "Disconnect" option.
Enable the "Sync Data Transfer" option.
Disable the "Auto Insert Notification" option.
Disable the "DMA" option (if available).
Click "OK."

I have tried your suggestions apart from the inane ones, I have also replaced the memory, updated the bios, still the same... It still has this problem even if I try and encode a file that is on my hard drive wav, wma etc..
-
Not mentioned previously is ASPI. Do you have latest from the Adaptec site? What about all the updates for W98? Latest MJ (8.0.394)?

It will not make any difference as it does it with files that are on the hard drive, what I mean to say is it is not using the CD Player..
-
So your saying that the ripping is fault free but it is crashing when encoding? Post your sys info from Help>System Info. What about the other things I mentioned?

What I am saying is it will rip Ok but when it comes to encode it hangs no matter what software, it will encode any other format but not mp3. Is it possible for a virus to get into the chips even though I have run the latest antivirus and found nothing.

There it is right there..."Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.318"
Download 8.0.394...install right over existing...download current encoders (when prompted)
You should update your ASPI as well (see Adaptec site). MJ must NOT be running when you update.

-
I have already tried all that
-
What do u mean? You installed 394, it didn't work, and then reinstalled 318?
Your sys info indicates your well behind. MJ stability has increased markedly since (even) 366...and your ASPI is old.

Amazing...
-
Yes I went back to 318 because other people had reported problems so I tried it didn't work so I left it on and as I keep saying It is not the ripping from CD that is the problem it is the encoding of a mp3 from hard disk or CD

There you go 393 will that do, it still doesn't work though !
-
Where did you get 393? 394 is on our downloads page.
Things to try.
Check for updates from MJ help.
Rip to raw wave to see if that works.
Encode a very short file.
If it's just MP3 encoding that doesn't work, then are you doing anything non-standard? Any custom settings? Are you using the mp3 encoder plug-in from our site?
What do you have the temp directory set to? Does the drive exist? Is there space?
In IE, clear out your temp files. Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete files.
