Title: Subtitles/Captions Not Working
Post by: Robert D on October 10, 2017, 08:24:10 am
I purchased it to replace Microsoft Media Center that I have been using for ten years on my HTPC, which I built.

I currently have MC23 installed on four computers - one laptop, two desktops, and my HTPC. The first three are running x64 WIN10 Pro and the HTPC is x86 WIN7

The problem(s) I have is the same on all four machines. I have spent uncounted hours to no avail trying to get MC23 to display captions during live OTA TV or even more importantly, during playback of any of my hundreds of recorded programs saved using Microsoft Media Center, which displays the embedded subtitles with no problems. Because of hearing issues, the inability to display captions is a real deal killer. Can anyone out there tell me how to make this work?

More Info:
I have four channels of HDHomerun for OTA TV

Options are set to always display subtitles.

During playback of a file that I know has embedded subtitles, right clicking and checking subtitles show "subtitles off" with no way to turn them on.

Nowhere on the forum page is there anything remotely resembling a "New Topic" button to push per the instructions given under Posting. I finally decided to try it as a reply. I hope it gets read.

New Topic is near the upper right corner of any index page:

I think you may be looking for closed captions, not subtitles.  MC doesn't support closed captions.

Jim is right.  Live TV closed captioning is still not supported.

OK, I can live without closed captions for live viewing, but I should still be able to display embedded subtitles in all my  PBS recordings (saved with Microsoft Windows Media Center) when I play them back with MC23, shouldn't I? Windows Media Center displays them just fine. If MC23 can't even do this, it can hardly be considered a suitable replacement for MS Media Center.

I have the same problem as you. I've been checking JRiver (installing the trial version, testing if caption works with LiveTV and recorded TV shows, and uninstalling) since version 12 I think. No luck yet.

I need  LiveTV caption and support for embedded subtitle on WTV (Microsft Media Center) formats but it seems is a low priority for JRiver. I'm sure someday they'll implement it.

For now, I'll continue using Win7 + WMC + Quad Hauppauge WinTV tuner until MS stop supporting downloading Electronic Program Guide (EPG) TV lineup for free.
