Title: Trouble Adding Sort Ignore Articles
Post by: clancyHOME on December 02, 2017, 03:08:28 pm
I have 3 audio files that use atypical characters in the Album Title or Artist Name and it's annoying me that they are always listed first in the sort.  I have been successful at adding a few other articles to the ignore list but when I try to add the following (see list below without the quotes) it doesn't affect the sort. I tried deleting the additional characters on one of the files, but it returned I believe after an online metadata update, but I'm not sure about that. I'm thinking it may be a font recognition issue, but I really don't want to fool around changing the default font. Any ideas?

left parentheses "("
three periods "..."
upside-down exclamation point "¡"

I'm wondering if the list of articles to ignore only gets ignored when there's a space after the article?

So just ignoring leading characters isn't exactly what it's intended to do.

Not sure what the best solution would be.  Any ideas?

It ignores leading articles only when the article is separated by a space character from its succeeding noun. This is exactly how it should be. Otherwise it would sort (say) “Theory” under “O” which is certainly not desirable..

Matt & Andrew, I thought of that and checked that out, but one of the other articles I added was an apostrophe without a space afterwards used at the beginning of an album title (IE: Miles Davis - 'Round Midnight) and the addition of the apostrophe to the article list worked just fine. I tried adding a space before and after in the article list (not the file/tag) but that did nothing. BTW thanks for the input.

Additional thought: Andrew, Your example makes perfect sense but punctuation characters are used differently and usually without space. Left parentheses example: Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

Coming next build we'll have this:
Changed: If the articles ..., (, or … are added to the article list, there won't have to be a space after them for them to get ignored.

Sure thing.  I added ¡ to the list.  If there are more, just say the word.

Thanks.

Maybe easier just to apply this to all non alpha numerics. Or??

Except that Unicode is a thing, and other languages may have odd characters that appear in articles and other words alike. No easy answers :(
Classifying all sorts of unicode characters would be quite the mess. I'm sure there are classifications out there somewhere..

Again you’re awesome and I really appreciate the hard work you guys are doing. Just to clerify the letter “i” is not the same as an upside-down exclamation point "¡" << you can cut/paste this if you need to

EDIT: just zoomed in to your original post the character looks correct.

I’m not a coder but Hendrix is probably correct “ No easy answers” there must be hundreds or thousands of special characters.

Doesn’t your SDK have built in functions for IsAlpha() and IsNumeric() ??

The apostrophe already works if you add it manually to the articles settings
