Please help. I have Downloaded JRiver and set it up as default in my sound, I'm on Win7, it says it's playing but I have no sound. Went to troubleshooter and it then switched me back to my soundcard audio Asus Donar DG, which plays fine. What am I missing on JRiver settings. I'm using computer into DAC. Soundcard is set to SPDIF out. What am I missing on JRiver settings. I can't see anything about SPDIF on JRiver.
Thanks.

I'd suggest running through the Wiki details and report back:
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Setup (https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Setup)
-
Thanks but I went through all that and still no sound.
-
i use spdif... you need to find that output on your dac and or check out all your audio devices 1 at a time in MC and or make sure you have turned on the asio driver in MC....once you get it working you will be amazed at the sound ;D , change your spdif glass, make sure the connection is correct
you need to be using the asio driver in MC (your dac name ASIO) or your sound card name ASIO in playback options
look for Asus Donar DG ASIO in MC audio devices
to find the ASIO Driver tools>options>general>features....make sure the ASIO Driver is checked and to be safe shut down MC and wait 30-45 seconds and restart it if it was not checked
and of course make sure MC and or your pc are not muted and or the volume is up....just saying to be safe ;)
this is what mine looks like

Please double check. It's likely you missed something.
In the Audio Setup topic, you can find information about testing from Windows > Sound. Please try that.

I'm confused now. There is no output on my DAC, anyway it plays fine on my soundcard, so that can't be the problem. It said choose direct sound in the guide? The Asio driver is checked. Volume is 100%. Where is the mute? Still does not work.
-
Rebooted, now gone back into MC and it works, seems to be the sound card name ASIO NOT direct was the problem. Many thanks.
-
JimH, seems the instructions are incorrect, Don't select Direct Sound, it does not work, you need to select your soundcard.
-
SWEET....the mute button on MC would be the little icon just before sound slider....it may be a speaker with sound waves....but that may depend on your skin....
-
OK but it was not that, it was the sound setting, should be my soundcard NOT direct sound as per the instructions.
-
Been comparing the sound and it's worse on JRiver, harsher, thinner and sounds to be breaking up at times. Any help with the settings before I give up.
-
Would you mind summarizing your setup and your settings?
Directsound should always work.
WASAPI would normally be preferred.
-
Well Direct sound does not work, I have retried and nothing as soon as switch back to Asus WASAPI it works.
Not sure what you want but here goes: WIN7, Asus DG soundcard, ext. DAC.
Settings on JRiver MC23 as attachment, if it works.
-
Here are DSP settings.

It would be good to get it working. You may not have a device set. Go to Windows Sounds and see if you can get sound there.
-
Can't get Direct sound, tried all sorts. Can't even get any sound now on JRiver.
-
You must have a very basic Windows problem. Did you try Windows Control Panel > Sound? If you can't get sound there, there is a problem with your machine, maybe with a driver.
Did you power everything off and back on, including the network?
-
Yes of course I have been in Control Panel, how else do you change anything? I have not powered off, not sure how that will help. I have sound apart from when using JRiver via sound direct. My sound via my soundcard is fine. Not sure what to do apart from tearing my hair out.
-

Slow down and do it right. Don't just try things. The Audio Setup topic on our wiki covers the basics.
In Control Panel > Sounds, can you get the test to play any sound? If so, how is it set?
-
Why does OM say "you need to be using the asio driver in MC (your dac name ASIO) or your sound card name ASIO in playback options look for Asus Donar DG ASIO in MC audio devices"?
-
Going round in circles. I have been in sound so many times. I can sound apart from when using JRiver Direct sound.
-
Why does OM say "you need to be using the asio driver in MC (your dac name ASIO) or your sound card name ASIO in playback options look for Asus Donar DG ASIO in MC audio devices"?
I say this because it's what works and sounds best for me....but I have other settings in DSP that you are not using! also im spdif out of soundcard to a yamaha reciever 5.1
-
But JimH is saying I have to get sound direct working but I can't. Is it to do with spdif cable?
-
no I doubt it...because its working on other outputs right?
It took me awhile to get spdif working, be patient and make only one change at a time so you don't get lost. you will find it and once it's working the sound out put is awesome and worth it....I promise.
look at my fist pic and see if that helps you find that setting by clicking on Device Settings and once again just looking at volume device make 1 change only, this way you know what you changed....sometimes you will need to reboot the pc also...I'm on w7 also and want nothing to do with w10
-
I've had it working but not sound direct, only as you said above with my soundcard but sound is poor. I don't know what else to do. Why it's work apart from on JRiver sound direct?
-
It isn't clear that you're able to get sounds from the Windows test in Control Panel > Sounds.
Yes?
-
Yes I can but depends which JRiver setting I'm using.
-
Yes I can but depends which JRiver setting I'm using.
If you're testing in Windows Sounds, shouldn't be a factor. It's just Windows at that point.
Make sure you're not trying to use MC's WDM. Uncheck it in Tools > Options > General > Features.
-
OK I have unchecked that.
-
But that just gets rid of JRiver. Yes I have sound in windows.
-
I don't have a problem playing music, only if I use JRiver MC, so what do you suggest now?
-
In Options for Audio, set MC to WASAPI or ASIO if you have a driver for your device.
In the Device section just below, choose your device.
-
OK but that's what I had yesterday. Do I need to check MC's WDM?
-
Don't use WDM until you get sound playing a FLAC or WAV or MP3 file.
-
I have sound but not via JR.
-
Right, but did you do this just now?
"In Options for Audio, set MC to WASAPI or ASIO if you have a driver for your device.
"In the Device section just below, choose your device."
Then, if you try to play a file from within MC, what happens?
WASAPI would be the safer choice, since your ASIO driver might not work.
-
I have this:
-
You don't need Exclusive Access.
-
OK I can play last.fm and have sound.
-
That's not a file. That's a web page.
-
But that's what I play, I don't play files from computer. I stream from Deezer, spotify, youtube etc.
-
OK. Now if you want MC to play the web streams, set up WDM. There is a topic here:
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WDM_Driver
-
I tried a cd and got this error message:
-
"Now if you want MC to play the web streams, set up WDM."
OK I can try it but that's where I was 24 hours ago.
I notice that JR is showing as a media server on my computer, does that mean all the sounds are going through it?
-
It's strange, that error implies it'll only work if you resample everything (via DSP Studio > Output Format) to 192 kHz. But I looked up the ASUS Xonar DG's specs and it only supports 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz and 96 kHz (and not 192 kHz). Also the DG is a 5.1 card - are you trying to use 5.1 channels or something like 2.0 or 2.1 with headphones or speakers? The specs aren't very clear there.
In any case there's likely something wrong with your setup somewhere, I'm thinking. Try opening the Windows sound mixer (Playback devices) and select the JRiver WDM driver and click Properties and go the Advanced tab and post a screenshot here of the settings there. Knowing what the default format is set to might be the key to this issue.
-
No i'm using 2 channel and that is what is set. Ive played cds before without any problem.
-
Can you right click on the speaker icon next to the clock on the Windows taskbar, select Playback devices and under the playback tab click on the JRiver device, click Properties and go to the Advanced tab and post a screenshot of that here please? Thanks!
-
I don't have any JRiver device in there.
-
So the WDM driver is disabled and not installed still? And attempting to play a CD through MC to the Xonar DG (with MC's Options > Audio set to WASAPI or ASIO) causes that error posted above? As a test, you *could* try opening the WASAPI settings window (like you posted above) and try checking Disable event style and see if that makes a difference. You *could* also try ASIO (if that's available for your sound card) and see if that makes a difference too.
-
Yes if you read the previous posts you will see, JimH told me to take it off.
-
For testing. It wasn't clear what you were trying to do. If you want to use MC's audio engine to play audio from a web page, you must use WDM.
-
I don't have any JRiver device in there.
Only if you enable WDM will you see JRiver as an audio device.
-
Please make it clear what you want to do.
Audio files played from MC?
or
Web pages played through MC?
You can do both, but please try one or the other first.
-
I want webpages. But yesterday when I used WDM the sound was poor. So you can't play webpages via JR MC without WDM?
-
So how come JR settings are affecting my sound even though I don't have WDM selected?
-
So how come JR settings are affecting my sound even though I don't have WDM selected?
Do you have exclusive mode checked when using the WASAPI output? If so and while listening to media in MC you don't hear system sounds and whatnot, that's why.
-
No JimH said I did not need it, so I unchecked it. See earlier posts. So do I need it it or not?
I still don't know why when streaming that JR affects the sound even if I don't have it open.
-
Exclusive mode means that no other application, even a browser, can play sounds using WASAPI.
If you use MC as a WDM driver, the web sounds are routed through MC.
-
I've reinstall WDM and I have sound but cd still will not play, I tried disable event style but made no difference.
-
Why does Windows Firewall block JR MC when I switch on my computer?
-
You need to change your firewall.
-
Why?
-
JRiver needs access to the Internet for cover art, etc.
-
But I have access to the internet on all sorts of sites but never had that problem before. It only happened today not before.
-
Block it if you wish. But it will break something.
-
I have to admit, this topic has me pretty confused and can't think of a logical reason for the issue(s) reported.
But yeah, blocking MC's access to the Internet will break things from working (e.g. plugin downloads if you're using MC for video via Red October HQ, possibly prevent embedded Chromium browser engine updates along with Widevine CDM plugin updates, cover art downloads as Jim mentioned, etc.).
-
I have not blocked it, just wondered why I was getting that message come up as never had it before on anything else. I'm only using music, streamed from Deezer mainly.
-
"Currently, JRiver is recommending that people not use WDM to listen to Tidal Masters"
I have Tidal on my system now, I'm confused how do you play it without WDM, I thought I had to have wdm to stream music from webpages for services such as Deezer, Spotify and Tidal?
-
Don't play decoded Master files, which are 88/96KHz. If you want to play Masters, do not use MC - connect Tidal directly to your DAC. WDM works fine for 16/44/48 input.
-
OK so it's just on Masters on Tidal?
Trying it now, it does work but there is a delay, misses about the first 8 seconds on the first track.
-
"Currently, JRiver is recommending that people not use WDM to listen to Tidal Masters"
I don't think JRiver has said that.
