Title: MC seems sluggish after update to 23 [Solved]
Post by: Bengi010 on December 27, 2017, 06:25:41 pm
I recently updated to MC 23 and everything seems painfully slow.  Previous versions have always felt very quick and responsive but now I can count to 3 while it loads a new screen.  I'm running a pretty capable computer so I don't think my hardware is slowing it down.  I ran the benchmark which I will post below but to be honest I don't really know how to read it.  I know it's not much to go on but any ideas?  Should I try a reinstall?

On initial install, MC will analyze files and create thumbnails.  It will speed up when done.

The total score is missing from your post. See my old workstation PC score below. Bengi010's image score looks a bit low doesn't it Jim? Specifically, the "Direct copying" looks bad. That could be because thumbnails were being created while the benchmark ran, I guess.

My workstation:

Anything else change on the machine or was this purely a MC upgrade?

I've noticed something similar... Clicking on Television from the left tree menu seems to be much slower than before. It used to load fairly quick but now I often have to wait a couple of seconds before anything happens.

I ran benchmark again this morning.  I do not believe thumbnails are still being created, I installed a few weeks ago and I am familiar with the initial lag as thumbnails load and rebuild, this is not that. Physically nothing has changed on the computer since before the update to 23.  It's an I5-6600k processor with 16 GB of ram.  I do wonder if it has something to do with where thumbnails are being stored.  All of my media files are on hard drives in an external enclosure.  However that has always been the case and never caused problems before.  Should I try deleting and rebuilding the thumbnail folder?  I see that compared to RoderickGI my Image Benchmarks are insanely slow.

Antivirus?

How are the drives connected?

the drives are in a 4 bay enclosure connected by a USB cable.  The enclosure also offers an eSATA connection if you think it would make a difference.  Antivirus is Bitdefender, has been the same for a few years now.  However I just checked on my cover art folder at that is located with the program on a local hdd

eSATA would be much better than USB 2, USB 3.0, but not better than USB 3.1 Gen 2. So it depends on the standard the enclosure uses. But if you are only accessing one drive in the enclosure at a time, the USB 2 at 480 Mbps or about 60 MB/s should be okay. So playback or copying a set of files to one drive at a time wouldn't benefit much from a faster connection.

Your graphics benchmark is insanely low. Are you on Windows 10? There have been several Windows 10 updates that have broken things, and one recent one forced me to update graphics drivers, because of some introduced incompatibility. So I would be upgrading graphics drivers rather than reinstalling MC or anything similar.

Also if you have upgraded to the lastest MC23 and are using Red October High Quality, then you are now using a new version of madVR. If you have customised any settings for madVR previously then they may be causing some problems. Note your customisations, but then reset madVR to the defaults. See if that improves things.

Make sure the drives are plugged into a USB 3 port.

esata would be a better choice.

If it is, then uninstall Bitdefender.  It is a repeat offender.

I updated video drivers and after a reboot MC is running normally.  New scores posted below are much much better.  I don't know if it was the drivers, which weren't more than a few weeks out of date or the reboot that helped.  My inclination is that it was rebooting the computer and I worry that it will slow down again, but we will see.  Thanks for your help and Happy New Year.
