Title: Analog Cable TV Configuration
Post by: sandersoft on April 02, 2018, 03:59:23 pm
Howdy.
I'm having problems with ANALOG cable TV channels.
I scan for DIGITAL channels, and they work fine.
However, when I scan for ANALOG cable, it finds the channels, but wont display them.
I get an error message to the effect of "CANNOT DISPLAY GRID", or something line that.
I'm using an HP PC with built in sound, porting the audio & video to my TV via HDMI.
My TV tuner is a Hauppauge USB NTSC/ATSC/QAM.
I finally got rid of Windows Media Center due to lack of support.
But WMC was able to scan display both ANALOG & DIGITAL channels.
During device setup on ANALOG, MC says that it requires a cable to go directly to the sound card.
What type of cable do I need?
Do I need to port the TV sound to the sound card to configure ANALOG TV with an RCA to Mini DIN?
I'm confused, and obviously missing something.
Can you help with this?
I really enjoy using MC for everything else, and have nothing but praise to the programmers!
However, I just can figure out how to setup ANALOG cable.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

No, generally it does not require a cable to connect to sound card.  That option is for very old devices.  It is presented to you as a checkbox.  If your Hauppauge device requires making such a connection, you should check the checkbox.  Otherwise you should leave it unchecked.

Please send me a log.  Here is the link to a wiki article on logging. (https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging)

Send the logging package to yaobing at jriver dot com

Hi.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
Attached is a screen shot of the error message when trying to view an analog channel, along with the error log file....
Hopefully, I'm just missing something simple here.  :)
Thanks!!
Dave

The error message seems to suggest that we are missing some component.  I hope the log will give me more info.

I am sorry I did not have a chance to actually take a look at the zipped package you sent until now.  Unfortunately what you sent did not include any log file.  It only contains a "system info.txt" file.  In order to get useful information about the problem, we need to capture a log after you actually preform the procedure that leads to the error.  Please make sure logging is enabled before you perform the tasks.  See the wiki article that I linked in my earlier post for details.

Thanks for getting back to me, Yaobing!

I'm enclosing the "log.txt" zip file, that contains the error message.
I couldn't find a specific "line number" that the error appears on, but it's about 3/4 of the way down.

Thanks again for looking into this for me!

Please download and unzip this file (JRTelevision.dll) (https://www.dropbox.com/s/e0remd17niexllk/JRTelevision.zip?dl=0), and copy it into MC23 installation folder C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23\

Let me know how it works.

Thanks Yaobing, but still getting the same error after unzipping new dll to Media Center 23 folder.
Rebooted, etc, but same error.
Enclosing a new log, to see if it helps you.
Thanks again!!

There were two issues.  I was hoping solving one would lead to solving the other.  Well, at least the first issue was solved.  I will work on it more on Monday.  Did you try running it without time-shifting?  Go to TV Options and uncheck "Start analog devices in time-shifting mode".  Also, if you schedule to record a show in JTV mode.  Will the recording play?

Hooray!
Disabling Time-Shifting for ANALOG WORKED!!
The picture doesn't "lock in" very well, and the audio sometimes "stutters", but at least we can watch our cable channels!!
Closed captioning doesn't work on analog TV, but I can live without it. (Would be nice though!)
Thank you again for your help!
No other company has ever given me quality tech support!
I'll leave you alone for the weekend, and maybe you have some other things for me to try next week!
Have a great weekend, and thanks again!!! :-)
