Post by: Z0001 on April 20, 2018, 12:36:36 am
Hi there

Is anyone aware of a friendly slot (as opposed to tray) uhd Blu Ray drive?

Cheers

I think the closest you will get is the LG BU30N - it's a slim laptop (but tray) drive.  I have the LG BU40N but it is not a friendly drive.

What do you mean by "friendly"?

Non-region specific?

I've been using a Matshita BD-MLT UJ265 (but it's region locked with 4 changes allowable) internal ODD for yonks and it has worked when I've needed it. Though I don't use it often and any disk that comes into my hands gets ripped by MakeMKV. Discs from other regions aren't an issue, in my experience, using MakeMKV - done that a number of times.

Found a listing for one here (I'm surprised it's still available for sale):
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/UJ265/ (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/UJ265/)
to give you an idea of specs.

Drives that support UHD ripping are often called "UHD friendly" drives.

Came across this post and curious to hear how you got UHD working on the Matshita UJ265.  I have the same drive and can't get it to read UHD discs with MakeMKV.
