Title: Feature request - DFF sidecar
Post by: jacobacci on April 28, 2018, 07:33:38 am
@ yaobingi was very happy to see your thread on ISO sidecar tagging.
DFF files cannot be tagged directly either, their metadata gets stored in the JRiver library. Would it be feasible to add sidecar tagging for DFF files as well?
P:S.: I convert all the DFF files that I can to DSF, so I can tag them directly. But there are some, particularly DST compressed ones, that cannot be converted to DSF by any of the current tools.
Would be a great addition. Even better would be a tool to convert DST compressed DFF files to DSF and make them taggable this way.
Thanks a lot.

if you use a mac, try dff2dsf

https://2manyrobots.com/plaster/

i've used it.  it works.  but when i rip my SACDs to IOS, I just use the same software to rip from ISO to DSF.

from there, use any tag editor you want - i use kid3 and it downloads the metadata and stores in DSF.

dff2dsf should also be available for MS Windows.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have tried with dff2dsf.exe, but with the three albums concerned, it throws an error message "error: input file is compressed"
To date I have not found a conversion tool that is able to convert compressed DFFs
I would be grateful for any insight on this.

Same app name, different developer in this case. 2ManyRobots' app works pretty well, but alas it's Mac-only. Never tried the Windows app with the same name. Not sure how it handles compressed DFF files though, as I don't have any to try. You *might* be able to convert compressed DFF files to Wavpack 5 and then back to another format, e.g. DSF if desired. Wavpack should support metadata nonetheless though. Of course, I'm not sure if any DFF/DSF conversion to Wavpack goes through a PCM stage (or vice versa). DSD is so complicated, IMO.

Having sidecars for DFF files seems like a no-brainer to me, so consider me a +1 for this request.

DFFs are a pain, especially compressed ones

DFF (and any audio type with plugins not supporting internal tagging) sidecar will work in an upcoming build.

That said, you should be able to use sidecar (MC24.0.20 currently available) if you set the mode to "Save in both sidecar and internal tags (if supported)" or "Save in sidecar only (not in internal tags)".  What does not work currently is the mode "Save in sidecar if internal tagging is not supported".  It will work in a new build.

That last option is the one I would need. Thanks a lot for making this happen, Yaobing

+ 1 for DFF sidecar and SACD.ISO sidecar too.

Thanks
