Title: WDM - streams and sample rates
Post by: michael123 on July 07, 2018, 05:36:01 am
Hello

I couldn't find, also in WiKi, regarding the acceptable data for WDM.

Does it receive DSD? DSD64..DSD** ?
If PCM, what are maximum sample rates and bits depth?

Thanks,

WDM is a driver.  It behaves like other audio drivers. It doesn't decode.

WDM seems to work quite reliably with 16/44 streams. However, at higher sample rates, it often skips to the point of being unusable.  The skipping seems source dependent. JRiver has decided not to investigate that problem further, at least at this time. Have not tried DSD.

So, give it a try and see how it works in your situation.

Of course I tried.
It works. With PCM only. DSD, even DSD64 does not work, but the converted PCM works

The problem probably is not with the reception of the stream, but the handshake against JRiver

If you tried DSD and it did not work, why not just report that? Was the problem with native DSD or DoP? What was the PCM sample rate for converted DSD that worked? I would not be surprised if native DSD does not work.

Different drivers support different sample rates. It is reasonable to expect the WDM documentation to state what sample rates are supported, including native DSD.

It was DoP

All supported formats of any driver are shown in the Windows audio properties. There is no DSD support or any compressed formats.

Is it difficult to add support for DoP?

Skipping can come from a lot of sources.  CPU, bandwidth, anything that gets in the way of reading the file, antivirus, etc.

There are no plans for that.

There are no plans for that.

Could you please update release notes and Wiki ?

There are no plans for that.

1X DSD DoP is just 24/176 PCM.  WDM should support that - correct? Windows reports that WDM supports 176K. Or is there something else involved.

MC will just think its plain PCM and apply any processing to it, so you would have to manually ensure its bitexact within MC. Seems to defeat the point to use the WDM driver just to funnel the audio entirely untouched to another audio driver. Why not use that in the first place?
Nothing preventing you to do that right now, still seems slightly pointless however.

Why untouched?

Same as DSD come from files, it can come as an external input to JRiver

Just wanted to clarify what is happening with WDM. It sounds like if all DSPs are turned off, then it is possible that 1x DSD DoP might work with WDM.

I agree it is an usual situation.

Thanks.

Files go through the DSD decoder, live input does not, since it has no concept of being anything but raw PCM.

If you want to play DSD, please use MC, not the WDM driver.

I'm going to lock this soon.
