Title: Click/Pop Between songs...
Post by: Screwdriver on July 20, 2018, 10:47:56 am
I searched here and Google and read through JimH's "Weird Problems" and could not solve the issue.

I get a click/pop between songs that is more pronounced between songs of different sample rates. The issue does not happen when going from song to song in an album. Can become very pronounced if I am running any 3rd party 64 bit DSP's like Redline Monitor. The issue sometimes will disappear for a little while, then come back. I have tried changing between ASIO and WASAPI added silence before a track, changed USB ports etc. This issue does not happen in MusicBee, Foobar2000, Audirvana or Roon.

It's only mildly annoying.......So, are there any other settings I should look at?

Some devices will click a little as they change sample rate.

One option would be to just resample everything to the same rate in DSP Studio.  You could enable the SoX resampler for the highest quality.

I was thinking of that. So I have a mix of sample rates, 16/44-24/192, and my DAC is 24/192. What should I sample to and does it affect sound quality at all?

Thanks!

IIRC "Gapped Fade" may reduce the bit-rate-change pop, maybe not. If you have a really low powered machine on-the-fly bit rate conversion may take significant CPU power.

The target bit rate you use is entirely up to you depending on what "perceived" compromises you are willing to make, eg. if you can hear a difference when down-sampling, up-sample the lower bit rate files to what you can live with (or all to 24/192), how many files you have of each type, etc.

You can also create different zones for different conversion setups (or none) and switch between zones as needed. There may be other options.

I'll take a look at "Gapped Fade" tomorrow as I am out of town atm. But I might have given that a try. I'll try different rates, just wasn't sure if there was some "multiples" that I needed to follow converting certain rates to others. Should be no issue as I am running an i7-7700k.

This is just annoying as it is only happening in MC.

So here is where I am at.

WASAPI - Click/Pops
ASIO - Click/Pops
ASIO4ALL - No issues
WASAPI Re-sample to 24/192 - No Issues
ASIO Re-sample to 24/192 - No Issues

I have no issues with click/pops in other programs, makes me wonder why it is an issue in MC.

Lots of other programs play through the Windows mixer so everything will get resampled automatically to the same rate.

So when I using ASIO or WASAPI in MusicBee it is still going through the Windows mixer?

ASIO, no. WASAPI depends if you're using exclusive mode or not. If you're using exclusive mode, then no.

K.....

Anyhow, it is what it is and I have workarounds. Resampling works and does not impact my CPU any more than not re-sampling.

Thanks everyone for suggestions.

Got this back from Tom at Schiit on this....

"That is normal operation and the pop/click sound you hear is the muting relay. It does this with JRiver and Foobar on my systems as well and is normal operation. In JRiver, I set the output to 24/196 for all files and it eliminates the muting relay clicks"

Why it isn't happening in MusicBee makes no sense....But whatever. I like JRiver MC better.

My guess would be it's already resampling everything.
