Title: Upgraded from v23 to v24 but WDM Driver sticks to v23. Is this normal?
Post by: Bluemoon on August 03, 2018, 01:51:22 am
As per subject line. I'm on Win10 r1803

So far I tried

* Disable WDM driver in MC v24 and reboot PC
* I uninstalled WDM driver (under Device manager) and rebooted
* Run MC 24 and enable WDM driver
* Check Windows playback devices. It's still MC 23 WDM driver, not 24

Is this expected or is my PC still keeps a copy of the old driver and refuses to install the new one?

Thanks

Make sure you're on the latest version of MC24 from the forums, as we improved the compatibility with the driver with Windows 10.
That said, sometimes Windows decides to keep the name when you upgrade the driver, sometimes it decides to reset it, even if people renamed it. You can always check the actual driver version in the device manager.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Under device manager, it's specified as MS provided driver (v 10.0.17134.1) dated 11/04/18

Not sure how to read it (see attached)

Try opening MC23 as an administrator then disabling the WDM driver from there and then close MC23. Open MC24 as an administrator and check the WDM Driver and close MC24. Then start MC24 normally and see if that worked.

That looks a bit weird. It should say "Driver Provider": JRiver, and our own version number. I would click the "Uninstall Device" button there, make sure to also click the checkbox in the dialog that comes up to delete the driver software, and then go  into MC24 and toggle the WDM driver feature off and on again, so it fully re-installs it (press Apply in between).

Thanks again

I tried both of you guys' suggestions. Sadly, nothing has worked. Still I get MC 23 (MS signed) WDM driver.

I also tried to uninstall it and manually install  JRiver's own driver in v24 drivers folder. Then I get the attached message.

Weird!

What is the full version of MC that you have installed?  Help > About.

Is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

Is Win10 64 bit?

JRiver 24.0.45 (64bit)

Win10 (64bit) 1803

The driver details bluemoon posted are very similar to the ones on my machine under Audio inputs and outputs - I have a jriver Mediacenter 24(JRiver Mediacenter 24) audio driver with microsoft signing, but further down under Sound, video and game controllers there is the correctly signed JRiver Mediacenter 24 audio driver. So bluemoon should check that one too.
As for the "weird message" the wdm driver folder contains both a 32 bit version folder and a 64 bit version folder so perhaps windows is trying to use the wrong one on the manual install.

Oh I guess that may explain it, if you're looking at the first entry. I figured it would be the actual device entry further down, which should have the correct version info.

Yes, indeed further down it 's JRiver signed v24 driver. Thanks for clarifying.

So, maybe MC 23 (WDM Driver) instead of MC24 just wrong wording?

Windows probably just remembered the old name instead of adopting the new one. You can rename it manually in the "Manage audio devices" dialog.
