Title: A Microsoft update may be causing MC to hang on exit
Post by: Yaobing on August 10, 2018, 09:15:34 am
In the last few weeks I have experienced a lot of hangs when exiting MC.  The hang was so severe the only way to get out of it was to reboot the computer.  We tracked the problem down to the point where MC was trying to clean up DLNA devices and closing sockets.  But we could not find anything wrong with our code.  I would say, it hung about 60 to 70 percent of times.  I figured there must be something outside of MC that was causing it.  So I did a search, and found a couple of reports of this sort of hangs.  Here is one:

https://forum.filezilla-project.org/viewtopic.php?t=49308

In a nutshell, Microsoft update KB4338818 was the cause.  In the discussion linked above, people said uninstalling the update fixed the problem.  In another report, Microsoft was said to have fixed the issue and released another update, KB4345459.

Here is the link to the update:

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4345459

Strangely, Microsoft did not push this update to my computer.  I had to go looking for it.  I went ahead with installing KB4345459 yesterday.  After the installation I have not had a single hang on exit.

If anyone is having MC hangs when exiting, take a look at your Windows Update history and search for KB4338818 and KB4345459.  If you do not have KB4345459, download and install it.

The fix that I posted above is for Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008.  For newer OS's check this page for possible updates:

That Windows 10 update arrived via Windows Update last month already though. The one for earlier versions may be included in a future patch day.

None of the 5 machines I've checked even has KB4338818 at all. They do have:
KB4340917 July 24, 2018. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4340917/windows-10-update-kb4340917
KB4338819 July 10, 2018. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4338819/windows-10-update-kb4338819

I'll be following this really close, and I'm glad to see someone is looking at it.

From what I gathered, there is not much to watch now.  If you are having exactly the same problem I described, you should look into updating Windows, or roll back certain Windows Updates.  That is all.  If you are not having the same problem, then this does not apply to you.

I can't blame JRiver but I just watched mine try to install 4340917 a couple of times and never succeed on Windows 10.  I restarted the machine, and haven't checked since but it seems like each time I turn off my TV and AVR for a few hours then come back to use the PC, I can't get any video from the PC without rebooting or trying to start task manager, and closing everything out.  I haven't looked very closely at it yet, and I'm still getting used to Windows 10 so Im not sure enough about the problem to say much yet.  I have the PC set to never sleep, I tell it not to turn off the display, and to the best of my knowledge, all power saving options have been disabled in both the OS, and BIOS.
