Title: Request: Expression Language Thread
Post by: swiv3d on August 12, 2018, 05:28:55 pm
Is there any chance of having a thread devoted to expression language and it's use. It is such a powerful part of the MC structure, but appears to be left in the background.

This is covered very well in the Wiki - one of the better pages. If you look at that and have any questions, it might make a good topic for a thread in the MC24 forum

Gold!  ;)

Swiv3d, if you think a thread should be started, go ahead and start one in the MC24 forum as Fitbrit suggests. That way everyone can see it, and participate. If the thread works well, then maybe it could be made a sticky.

There are plenty of examples in the forum, but mostly they are very specific, and often devolve and branch into discussions of all sorts of issues. So it is usually best to have users just ask for help on their specific issue. No-one is going to search a 168-page thread for the specific idea they are looking for, so the nuggets are lost.

Perhaps you could search the forum and collect all the nuggets of knowledge, and include them in a few posts you maintain in a thread, or even create a Wiki page with Expression Language examples? That way the nuggets won't get lost in all the chatter.  8)

No problems fitbrit but don't you think that RDJames' understanding of expression language and it's application isn't available to a wider range of users is a loss to us all?

I use it expressions often, and have memorised a few simple ones. For other things, I refer to the wiki, which is really good on this topic as I said. Every now and again as necessity dictates I become familiar with another expression or usage variant. For specific problems, I ask in the forum and harvest suggestions. I think a general thread would be less useful than the wiki, unless it had an indexed first post with links to examples of doing what one is trying to achieve. I still think that the Wiki would be the best resource, especially if it were bolstered with more examples, screenshots etc. In general, I am not a huge fan of the Wiki, but the expression language part is worthy of praise.

MrC used to be the Expression guru here.  His posts might be useful.

I maintain a very short list of MC handy tips and tricks, set up options and expressions that I have used. I find working examples far easier to modify to get them to do what I want than trying to work from a reference guide and build them from scratch. I also see what can be done from looking at what other people do rather than trying to invent it myself. I have posted them under previous versions but they are now effectively lost to all but the dedicated/people with too much time on their hands  :)

Good examples are peppered throughout many many postings over many many versions of MC. As noted already examples tend to be part of (long?) discussions so they are not easy to isolate by thread.

MC does tend to hide (bury?) many of its powerful features in a myriad of forum postings that does mean many people don't find them readily (or possibly at all)  ? I have never understood this.

If you find a way to make these more prominent (sticky post Jim?) or edit the Wiki and add them yourself that would be great but I have found my efforts fall on stony ground in the past. Maybe I'm just not dedicated enough  :)
