I posed the question as to possible updates to JRemote but received the reply that no upgrades would be in the offing. Is that true? Frankly, the number one want on my JRiver wish list is a viable IPad- networked-based control system.

I believe Panel will be the mobile / device control medium of choice moving forward, as it's platform agnostic. Have you tried it out?

We haven't ruled out changes to JRemote. There have been minor changes recently. But it's generally stable and widely used, so we've been working on other things.
As imugli said, Panel is our principal direction for remotes. It runs on everything.

Seems *really* unlikely while JRemote exists...
Panel's day may come but for me it currently feels like the Internet c.1995, whereas JRemote is what I expect from a modern control point and so is my only choice for controlling MC. For me to ever consider using Panel it really needs to up its game, both in looks, functionality and usability - at a minimum it has to look and work as well as JRemote currently does and it's currently a long way off that.
Apologies for frankness, and I realise my comment will be unpopular, but Panel feels like it's being forced upon us when it's really not ready for the Internet c.2018..

Your frankness is appreciated, but Panel will never be JRemote. It's intended to be easier to learn and use, and quicker for touch screen. The development environment is open and it's independent of the OS.
Panel is the future. JRemote is the past. Both have a role in the JRiver world.

Sorry, but I don't know what Panel is. Is this another remote desktop emulator like Splashtop, which barely ran on my old IPad? I am also surprised that JRiver has not updated JRemote to keep up with the recent offerings such as streaming, if not operate the system entirely in lieu of a desktop computer.

This is Panel.

For this type of question, always try Google and add JRiver to the search.
The wiki has a topic on Remotes. They aren't Remote Desktop solutions.
