When I convert a file to dsd, its maximum level decreases by about 6dB.
This happens even though the file I convert is also dsd.
Is there any way to avoid this?

DSD conversion always goes through PCM, no matter what. If you convert to PCM, the volume gets lowered somewhat.
There is an option to try to compensate for that, but its not universally safe, as it can result in clipping, but you can try it:
Settings -> Audio -> Advanced -> Configure Input Plug-in -> DSD Input Plug-in -> Increase Volume of DSD to PCM by +6dB
