I have introduced two new fields: Record Label and Source.
This leads in each standard view to double entries in the library database:
e.g. Artist …..track 01.flac
Artist… track01.flac
In the associated folder there is only one entry: track01.flac.
What is the reason for this? And how to get rid of the second entry? There now thousands!
-
It can happen if you are importing the files from a network path and also from a mapped drive that points to the same location.
-
I have not imported any new files. I introduced two new fields on the MC server machine via remoted desktop.
Yes , I have mapped drives. So file path is e.g. M:\\.... track01.flac
-
Check your auto import settings - as JimH says the usual cause of double entries is having two seperate paths to the same file. If you look at the addresses of the duplicated files are they exactly the same?
-

Yes, exactly the same:
M:\Audio\(Multiple Artists)\Women - The Best Jazz Vocal (Disc 1 of 2)\07 - Why Should I Care (1).flac
M:\Audio\(Multiple Artists)\Women - The Best Jazz Vocal (Disc 1 of 2)\07 - Why Should I Care (1).flac
I have now re-imported my whole M:\Audio library.
Double entries differ in the metadata e.g Publisher: NativeDSD whether the duplicate for Publisher is empty.
How can this be happen?

Odd!! Do you have your windows 10 music folder pointing to the same address?
-
Do you have your windows 10 music folder pointing to the same address?
Win 10 Explorer has no issues -> if I click Locate on Disk (external) everything is OK also if I browse through Win Explorer to the Album - all files are there and no duplicate *.flac files.
In the beginning of the day everything was OK, then I added two new fields resulting in the current big! problem.
-
I have just tried adding a field by remote connection (although I use team viewer) added some data to a number of fields and there wasn't any duplication of entries in the library. It might be a windows remote desktop thing. Do all of the duplicated files have a consistent difference in one field which you could select them on? If so you could find them and remove them from the library. Personally if I do anything like adding fields I generally do it directly on the server.
-
Looking back through the forum posts I see you have had duplication problems before so I would think that there is something odd about the way your system is set up. are you using MC 24.0.60?
-
are you using MC 24.0.60
yes
The problem with the duplicates appears only for audio files.
-
As far I have seen now - all the duplicates have no User assigned in the "User" Column.
-
Ok, none of my files have a user value. Who is the user in those duplicated file entries with a value in the field? At least it will be easy to select and delete those entries with an empty user field and then delete them.

Post an image of your Auto Import settings like the one below Manfred.

Yes its easy to delete them, its not for all items and I would like to understand what happend (I have had the problem now for the second time).

Some questions to try to narrow down the problem -
1. Did you at some time set up a user with restricted access - such as only audio files?
2. On the main server under View>User is more than one user listed?
3. Are the files duplicated in the clients library as well as in the main server library?
4. Does your client log on to the main server with a user and password and what access is granted?

1. No (if had not typing something wrong as an unnoticed error)
2. yes
3. yes
4. yes - not restricted

Could you set up a new temporary library called something like test and import just a few albums into it.
Look at the user field to see if there is any data in it.
Then on the main server (NOT using remote desktop) add a new library field called test1. Check whether the library shows duplicated file entries.
Then remote desktop into the main server from your client machine and add another new library field called test2. Check whether files are now duplicated.

I have a client (PC) running "MC Client" and my physical Server running "MC Server"
Should I create a new temporary library on the MC Server? If yes, an empty library or a clone of my existing library?

I created a local new library called test on my "MC Server" and imported 5 existing Album's. from my Audio/… folder on the physical server.
Look at the user field to see if there is any data in it.
No -> Importing Albums seem not to include the User's.
Then on the main server (NOT using remote desktop) add a new library field called test1. Check whether the library shows duplicated file entries.
Logged into the physical server using iKVM remote mgmt. Created a new library field called test1. No double entries.
Then remote desktop into the main server from your client machine and add another new library field called test2. Check whether files are now duplicated.
Remote desktop into the physical Server ->Files are not duplicated

In answer to this question
2. On the main server under View>User is more than one user listed?
You said yes - how many users are listed? Is it possible to remove them leaving just the Administrator user?
Clearly duplication of your files is not caused by remote connection so the only thing that is left is some problem over the users on the main server.
You should delete the new fields in the test library and then delete the whole test library.

yes
how many users are listed?

I like to say no - not everyone should see everything (I use MC also as document archive for bank statements etc.)
I think about a different test case: With the testlib there were no users , adding two users and then adding a new field should prove if more than to users and adding a new field leads to the duplicates.
-
That a good idea - limit one to only audio with some sort of restricted access.
-

I have done that, but no duplicates. ?
In the mean time I have got through every album and removed the duplicates from the library. Last time as it first occurs I restored a backup.
There were albums with no assigned users and no duplicates but also albums with assigned users and also no duplicates. The duplicates had in some cases not the same metadata (less) as the entries with the assigned users. ?
-
Perhaps the cause is adding the new fields when one of the non admin users is selected - perhaps it would be wise to ensure that when you remote in to the server that you check which user is currently selected and change to the admin user before making any major changes to the library structure in future.
-
I remember now what I did, what I normally not do.
I ripped a cd on my PC under main library. Usually I copy the folder from the PC to my server under Audio/… with windows explorer and auto import of MC on the server does the rest.
But last time I used the Library Tools of MC to copy the tracks to the server. But the main library has not the same users as the library on the server. Maybe that was causing it but I really don't know.

Seems like the most likely explanation for now anyway!
