Title: JRiver + Topping D30 producing intermittent, mid-pitched tones [Solved]

First time poster here. I'm an avid JRM user, and I just added a Topping D30 dac to my system. The soundstage is wide and overall sound impressive for such an inexpensive unit.

JRM settings are adjusted according to Toppings' recommendations:

   XMOS USB 2.0 (ASIO)
   Output: DSD bitstream in DoP format
   Bitstreaming: Yes (DSD)

DAC and laptop volumes are maxed (per the suggestion of another poster). Yet after an hour or so of play, I start getting intermittent, mid-pitched "tones" (not static or buzz sounds) that last about 1 second. If I could resolve this problem, I'd be muy happy.

I would appreciate any guidance you can offer!

Welcome to the forum.  Did the manufacturer provide the ASIO driver?

I downloaded it myself, from the XMOS site (I bought the dac slightly used).

What happens if you don't use that driver?

Honestly, this sounds kinda like a hardware issue to me, especially if it happens right in the middle of playing media after a certain amount of time. Where did you buy it used? From Topping or a third-party seller (e.g. eBay)? You might want to contact Topping about your issue, because I'd be highly concerned about the issue being in the hardware itself. Does it only happen with specific file types? Does it happen if you open YouTube in a browser and play a video that's over an hour or two long?

I could be wrong (and for your sake, I hope I am, because it's such a bummer to have malfunctioning hardware).

If it always happens after about an hour, check the power settings on the PC.

Well I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, and now JRiver isn’t recognizing the output settings. I think it’s a driver issue, but not sure. I’ll check in after some investigation. Is WASAPI an option?

Yes.  WASAPI would be fine.

Update.

So, my initial problem was the intermittent tones. The driver was TUSBAudio (ASIO). I reinstalled the XMOS driver, but JRiver was then unable to play my music files due to some kind of output error. I noticed a driver setting that appears when connecting the dac is D30 WASAPI. This does the trick, although I have no idea why this setting works and the others don't. In any case, I'm happy to be enjoy the music again.
