Title: Access to tracks across my home LAN?
Post by: mcphzgig on May 22, 2003, 02:26:48 pm
I use a simple Windows XP network to link a mini-tower machine and my laptop.

Is it possible to set a Base Path in Tools>Options>File Naming & Location on one computer (the laptop) that references a music folder on a second computer?

Paths that work perfectly in Windows Explorer, like

   \\CompA\Sharedocs\Music

can be typed in, but don't seem to work for MC.

If you want to know why I would like to do this, it has to do with iPod upload not working with the Firewire ports on the main computer, but working OK from the Laptop. BUT the laptop doesn't have enough disk space for my music files.

Media Server will share music across a network.

Thanks, John

From the Help files, it sounds as though Media Server might enable what I want to do.

What I will have to test out is whether the files made available can be uploaded straight to my iPod through the 'client' MC instance.

I can now confirm that the transfers work from Media Server, to the client MC instance, to the iPod.

The only problem is it takes just long enough that the iPod's battery runs flat before the transfer is completed (no my Firewire ports don't supply power!).  Back to the drawing board....
