Title: JRiver flac plugin install fail
Post by: georgec on February 14, 2019, 01:54:23 pm
Since I haven't worked with JRiver since a brief encounter some years ago, I qualify as a noobie.  What I'm trying to do should be so simple that I must be making some fundamental mistake

I did the following to install the flac plugin:

1. Opened DSP Studio
2. Then selected "Manage Plug-ins...">"Add JRiver, VST, or Winamp Plug-in..."
3. When queried by Windows 10,  selected "Yes".
4. When the "Select Plug-in File" appeared, I highlighted the flac .dll file and clicked on "Open"

The plugin doesn't appear in the list of plugins in DSP Studio and no error message appears.
I loaded the 64 bit version of JRiver and assume that the plugin list that appears contains the 64 bit plugins.

Why are you trying to install a FLAC plugin when MC already has a FLAC decoder and encoder built-in?

I simply assumed that if JRiver saw the wisdom of having a flac plugin available, it was for a good reason.

Furthermore, the fact that this (presumably) straightforward procedure is failing makes me wonder if something else may be wrong.

Sorry to be dribbling this out, but hindsight is always 20-20.  In fact, none of the JRiver plugins that I tried from the plugin folder installed.

You are trying to install plugins which are already a part of the jriver system - the dsp plug in management allows you to incorporate specialised plug ins  which are not already part of the system.

My understanding is that the plugins already installed are listed on the left in the DSP Studio.  And that the additional JRiver plugins are located in a plugins folder and have to be installed.  If I'm mistaken, I'd like to be corrected.

The plugin folder you are looking at is the basic system plugins which JRiver automatically installs when needed - eg if you want to transcode a file to mp3 it will download and install the necessary encoders. DSP studio plugin management is about installing specialised plugins to carry out functions within DSP studio it will show any of these specialized plugins if they are installed or if you have downloaded some it will show them as available for install. Look up DSP Studio on the Wiki!

I googled endlessly and read a number of discussions off of this forum and then read what seemed to pertain on this forum.  I was led to believe what I just stated and you've said nothing to has changed my mind (I may have to eat those words! lol)  As you say, the installed plugins are listed on the left in the DSP studio.  None of the ones in my Media Center plugin folder are.  Any that you install form that folder should then appear in that list.

You just don't get the basics at all! The plugins you are trying to install have nothing to do with DSP Studio - they are files necessary for transcoding from one format to another. They will never show in DSP because they basically have nothing to do with DSP.

May I suggest that you take your own advice and go to the wiki for DSP (and under that heading, DSP Studio) at https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DSP.  If you then read under "Managing VST Plugins" you will see exactly what I layed out in my first post.

You aren't looking at VST plugins - you are looking at the basic transcoding files necessary for JRiver to be able to convert audio files from one format to another. TAPS head and shakes it in despair!

georgec,
Your posts have had a lot of blank lines.  I've removed some of them.  Is that intentional?

There is a default set of plug-ins that MC ships with.  FLAC is one of those.  Can we just leave it at that?

FLAC isn't a VST plugin, that's why it won't work. Plus like I said FLAC is already built-in too, so there's also no reason to add a FLAC plugin. It's just not going to work that way for you.
