If you're on Windows 7, make sure all Windows Updates are installed. We use relatively recent D3D tools, and that requires some updates in Windows itself to be present.

that was the problem, it is now working like a charm

I don't understand what I have to do to get theater view to display.  I automatically download Windows 7 updates and to the best of my knowledge have no pending Windows updates.

If you're using Windows 7, make sure you have this update installed: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2999226/update-for-universal-c-runtime-in-windows

I tried installing the Windows update and got the message that it is already installed.  Still, theater view does not work.

Why has this thread ceased?  I just installed the latest version, and still theater view does not work even though I have the alleged required Windows 7 update installed.  What do I have to do to get theater view to return?

You have not provided any information we could even begin to formulate an answer on. What exactly is the error you are getting? Can you make a Log? What graphics card?

Any other problem so far was quite simply missing windows updates, like the original reporter in this thread.

I am now at 25.0.34 and still no theater view.  When I open it I get the message Error starting OpenGL engine (Loading OpenGL shaders failed).  The screen is otherwise black.

What version of Windows?

Please post a Log file - https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

But do note that the shaders failed message is in 100% of all previous cases associated with the lack of the Windows update being installed. So please double check that this update is installed (and the correct one for your OS version):
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2999226/update-for-universal-c-runtime-in-windows

On Windows 7 also ensure that Service Pack 1 is installed.

I downloaded and installed an all encompassing Win 7 update, and it did install one update.  It did not, however, resolve the theater view problem.  I tried downloading your suggest Windows 7 fix and got the same "already installed" message from Windows.  Still no theater view, and the error message hasn't changed.

I hope this is what you need.

The log is fine, but it points to the exact same issue that everyone else had - which was cured by installing the missing windows updates.

I suggest uninstalling that update, reboot, and re-installing it.

Windows can be funny about such things sometimes. Maybe the fix you have installed got updated at some stage, so while Windows says you have it already, maybe not the latest version.

I deleted Windows update KB2999266-x64 per your instructions, re-installed it successfully, restarted the computer, and theater view still fails with the same "error starting opengl engine" message.  How can I get it working again?

I repeat my request for a solution to the theater view problem.  I have tried everything you've ask and the problem remains.

The only solution is to install the required Windows 7 updates, since according to Hendrik and the log posted above, your system is somehow still missing it/them. At the very least make sure you have the latest drivers for your GPU/onboard graphics installed. The only other solutions (which I don't think you'd like but would recommend anyways since Windows 7's extended support ends in January 2020 which more-or-less means Windows 7's death) would be upgrading to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Other than that, there's not much you can do unless you figure out what update(s) are missing in your Windows 7 install which are required get it working.

At this point, because of Windows 7's extended support ending in January 2020 (which is more-or-less 8 months from now), if I were you I'd begin thinking about what you're going to do when that happens because once extended support for Windows 7 ends, Windows 7 should be considered a dead operating system. For security reasons alone, I wouldn't recommend sticking with Windows 7 past the extended support end date because it will no longer receive security updates (unless you're willing to pay a lot of cash to MS for them, which will only last a couple more years). Your only Windows options would be upgrading to Windows 8.1 (which extended support will end in a few years too) or Windows 10. Upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 are still free to do (even though MS doesn't advertise it). Of course you could also jump from Windows to a Linux distribution like Linux Mint or Ubuntu if Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 upgrades are unacceptable to you.

And... that's really the bottom line here.

All I can tell you is what the log says - the Direct3D shader compiler cannot be loaded. The shader compiler itself is actually bundled with Media Center (d3dcompiler_47.dll), however on Windows 7 it only works if certain updates are installed - which any ordinary system should get through Windows Update just fine. In some cases manual install has helped to resolve install issues, like with the original reporter in this thread.

This is literally all I can tell you. This module has to load, if it doesn't work on your system, then its something very specific to your system, and since I have no access to your system, I cannot tell you what the reasons might be. I can only guess that something with your Windows Update is screwed up. But thats out of the scope that I can fix. A functioning OS is the very least we have to rely on to make Media Center work.
