Title: Feature request: Philips Hue Sync and JRiver
Post by: notbad on March 28, 2019, 04:10:54 am
Hello,
I am a Philips HUE happy user/client. As of today it is easily possible to syncronize HUE lights with ITunes using the HUESync desktop App, this is not possible whit JRiver jet.

Would that be possible with JRiver in the next future? it would be very nice!

I would also like to know this. The Hue Sync FAQ states:

Quote
Does Hue Sync work with Power DVD, Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video?

Hue Sync capability is limited by Digital Right Management (DRM) regulations and as such, the feature cannot capture all content and does not work with these streaming services.

So does that mean it's impossible? If it is, MC could control the Hue lights directly through the Hue API, independent of the Hue Sync app, like Kodi (XBMC) has done since 2013.

The Kodi script is here https://github.com/mpolednik/script.kodi.hue.ambilight/ in case it's of any help to the MC developers (if they decide to check out the possibilities  :) )

Unless something has changed, this is already possible.

I have hue lights and I had this working.  I haven't used it for quite awhile now, but it definitely worked at one point in time.

I can see if it still works when I get home today.

Here's a crappy video I made for a buddy of mine showing it in use https://www.dropbox.com/s/qxfgasa4x1oeas8/Hue.MOV?dl=0

Very nice, Moe.
MY question is how do you achieve this?

Also, what's the track from the first video?

I do it with my Philips Hue smart lights and their app. This link should have all the details.

That song is The Guidelines by Aceyalone. The album is A Book of Human Language. It’s awesome.

Thanks on both counts. Will check it all out!

It's pretty slick.  It works with video too.  As an example if there is a big fiery explosion in a movie the lights will turn red and orange to match.  Essentially, the color of the lights will match what is on your screen.  Here is a quick demo.

If you have multiple lights they operate independently as well.  If the left side of the screen has something yellow displayed and the right side has something purple displayed then you'll have a yellow light on the left and purple on the right.  If you have a light in the middle you can watch the color pan from one side to the other.

I've never got it to work with JRiver playing local music files.
It starts to and then stops immediately.
Do you have any idea why it doesn't work for me when playing local music files?

But it does work for me if I route audio to JRiver from other apps e.g. Spotify, Radio Navigator Pro using WASAPI Loopback.

Sorry, but I have no idea.  It's always just worked for me, I never had to do any troubleshooting or anything so I can't really offer any advice.

I was wondering if one needs to use Microsoft DirectSound or Microsoft WASAPI with the sound device; I'm currently using ASIO.
I might try them.

I just tested and that seems to be the case. I use direct sound. I tried WASAPI and it stopped working.

Thanks for that.

That was my next question too, and the answer I expected as well. With WASAPI and exclusive mode the signal goes directly to the sound device I imagine, and cannot be routed for "inspection" to the Hue software en route. A pity!

Yeah, as with ASIO.

There is another way to do it and that's to use the all4hue mobile app which will use the microphone of the mobile device.
I've found it works OK but not as responsive as Hue Sync as to be expected.
Although I have not used it for some time and it may have improved.

Warning, this could be a stupid idea. I’m not really all that familiar with zones and more thinking out loud here. But could you have one zone that is direct sound that you could just mute that would provide the info to Hue Sync and then your ASIO or WASAPI zone playing to your stereo and get the best of both worlds?

I was thinking of adding another Zone with DirectSound just for those times I wanted to use it with Hue Sync.
I didn't think of actually linking the two together using my ASIO one for my actual sound device and the other with DirectSound using the default Windows sound device for Hue Sync to pick up.
In my case the default Windows sound device is typically my TV which I would mute.
It might work!
I will try some time.

Unticking the Open device for exclusive access option of the WASAPI device might provide a solution too.

Good news!  I can confirm that this works.  I had one of these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IRVQ0F8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) laying around so I decided to give it a whirl.  Set that little USB sound card to direct sound, set my main output to WASAPI and I have lights and sound.  I guess it wasn't a stupid idea after all.
