Just received a [spam] message from mediacenter@jriver.com with the subject
Subject: JRiver Media Center has arrived.
To: mlist@listserver.jriver.com
Question - is this list a mailing list to all registered MC users and can ANYONE email messages to it?
If yes:
If so, I request that JRiver kill this spammable broadcast email immediately.
I just had to go to through the trouble of changing my personal email id to eliminate the mountains of spam I get, and if this email address is usable by anyone, this compromises my current new email id.
I though about just trying to send to it to test, but that's not a good thing, if everyone gets it.
-
Yep,
just received the same.
But I don't think you can classify this as spam. I'm pretty sure JRiver is careful about this.
-
That's a message that we sent.
Why do you think it's Spam?
No, you can't e-mail the list. It's only done from inside JRiver.
-
I think a more relevant question is, how did we wind up on the list?
Is it from entering our email address on the MC download page and checking the box that authorizes that these emails be sent?
Or is it simply from being a registered user?
Or is it both?
Because somehow, I got two of these messages. Not that I mind, as I don't consider it spam. I did sign up at one point, but I'm curious as to why I'd get two messages.
Also is there a way to be removed from the list?
-
I was getting so much spam I was overloaded before I changed my email id recently.
Since I am already using MC9, receiving any email telling me I can is redundent....
It's like when I already get the local newspaper, and then they call me on the phone trying to sell me the newspaper.
I prefer to receive NOTHING from anyone that I did not request. Is there a way to opt out of unsolicited email messages from JRiver?
-
We sent it to anyone who downloaded, anyone who purchased, and anyone who is a member of the forum.
If you don't want to be informed of what we're doing, the message has an unsubscribe link.
-
I can't seem to find the unsubscribe link, can you tell me where it is on the email? Thanks.
-
It would have been at the bottom of the message. It's likely though that the one mailed to members of the forum didn't have one.
You can always delete your account here.
-
This is getting complicated, I don't want to delete my account, never asked to delete my account.
I do want to opt out of all unsolicited emails.
-
I do want to opt out of all unsolicited emails.
I was starting to understand that, but we can't do it and keep legitimate customers informed. You'll have to decide which is more important to you.
Maybe later, when we're bigger, we'll be smarter.
Sorry this is annoying to you.
-
Well maybe if you had charged v8 users to upgrade to v9 you could have afforded to make this change to your system.... (didn't cost me anything to upgrade, and thanks for the no-charge upgrade).
So thanks for the information, and I accept the compromise.
-
I hate spam as much as anybody, but I'm not up in arms over this--even though I'm one of the ones who received two copies of it.
Probably everyone here gets 10 or 12 or 50 "new forum post" notification emails a day, the majority of which turn out to be stupid, vapid, meaningless posts like the one you are reading right now. And even if those emails have more of an opt-in element than the one in question today, they are much more "real-world" trouble if they cause you to waste time loading your browser and finding the new post(s) that triggered them.
If the emails kept rolling in, which I really doubt they will, I'll set up a filter in my email client. Doing so will take much less time than I've already wasted reading and posting in this thread.
-
Well, I pick and choose which forum messages I read, if you get an email for every post, that was your choice. Just like you are reading this one.
And if you don't mind unsolicited emails, that is your choice, but I don't appreciate you belittling me for it.
I read many forum messages are meaningless to ME, so I don't respond, and I certainly don't respond and belittle the writer.
You now have a choice, you can just ignore this thread, since there is nothing to be gained from it, or you can choose to slam me again. Which will it be? (and silence is a very good answer).
-
I didn't "slam" or "belittle" you. When I used the phrase "stupid, vapid, meaningless posts like this one", I was referring to my own, current post.
And I do hate unsolicited email. But when I know exactly who sent it, why they sent it, and the fact that the content of the message is legitimate, I hate it a whole lot less. I do not think they should have sent that email, but I don't have an "Off with their heads!" feeling about it, either.
I am sorry you misunderstood my previous post. Rereading it myself, I probably would have taken it the same way, and I would have been annoyed. I just edited it.
-
Hi all
I also got the email, but accidentally deleted it, can you send it again so I get the correct link for the free upgrade, (I purchased last year, well before December)
Thanks

Jim,
I received the email message Thursday the 15 and straight away I unsubscribed.
Then on the 15th I received the email message again.
Why?
-
I did not get mine, i think it was because my e-mail was broken for a few days
can I be sent mine again?

Howdy,
Hey folks, on the dowload page you are asked for your email address. You are told it will be used to send you email when things change. And you are given a box to opt out.
There is a link to quit receiving messages in the email you received.
If it were done without you knowing or came from a commercial spam outfit then I'd be concerned.
This came with your permission from a company you know and has a way to stop future messages.
-
I have the best Spam Killer in the world . . . .
whenever I am requested to provide an email address, I simply provide my Ex's email address ;D
You can forward your SPAM there also if you like ;D ;D ;D

Not quite:
We sent it to anyone who downloaded, anyone who purchased, and anyone who is a member of the forum.
When you join the forum, there is no blurb about opting in.
-
I think there is when you signup to the forum, it does request your e-mail.
if your refering to loging on to the forum when you vist the forum no it does not.

I have now lost the restraint I desperately tried to maintain and must now contribute to this thread.
I am genetically anti-spam. So much so that several of my email addresses have appeared on supposedly secret Do-Not-Spam lists shared by spammers in order to avoid retribution from motivated individuals. This may or may not have been a result of getting several hundred spam accounts and open relays closed in a couple of years ;)
I was initially annoyed by the J River missive. But, given that I have received no other missives from J River in a period of ~1 year, I really didn't have a problem with this recent one, especially given that it was a major version update and not pure tripe.
It would be nice if there were some integration with the forum, possibly in the form of a YABB mod, to let users define their level of announcement involvement. The YABB mods site appears to be down ATM, so I don't know if one is already built.
Whatever - as long as I don't feel that I am getting needlessly sporged by J River, ie. more than one message every 3 months, then it's NBD to me. May God Almighty help you if I receive more than that ;D
All of the above is IMO, YMMV.
