Title: MadVR upcoming Envy
Post by: tij on April 23, 2019, 10:48:10 am
wanna speculate what upcoming madVR envy is?

lots of forum think its a madVR box that does things similar to lumagen ... i personally bet it is what madshi stated it is “4K HDR tone mapping (and more) from any source”

meaning its a box that does tone mapping ... the “more” part is probably to do with calibration like 3DLUT

... that means scaling will be still left to madVR running on PC ... madshi did state that he still works on madVR and new version is coming soon ... which makes no sence if madVR envy does scaling

tone mapping wont require that powerful hardware as scaling ... so hopefully box will be affortable

if i am wrong ... and box does scaling ... i better start saving for it ... as it might cost tons then lol

... god i hope it gives better result than dolby vision as its a big mess now ... my 2016 lg oled  c6 and e6 TV are now incompatible with new Dolby Vision profile run by XBOX :/

Something like madVR running on a powerful GPU will always offer more customization, flexibility and control. But unfortunately many media sources are no longer available on a HTPC, or only with quite a big hassle, so for Netflix etc, this may be quite nice.

darn ... this gonna cost a bit if scaler is powerful ... if lumagen with scaler and adaptive tone mapping is any indication of price ... this gonna need some major wife approval stamp

it is sad to see that video is going down music path too ... streaming convinience at expense of quality ... closest shop to me that sell bluray is closed now (and it was 100km from where i live) ...  wonder if there will be something like hdtracks for video too where only way to get high quality video is through dowload ... i shiver at prospect to need dowloading 50gb files

Checked my UHD Collection.  Largest is 127GB and the Medium is 59GB.  Don't want to be downloaded these from some "service".  I'll continue to buy while they still make them.  Can't wait to rebuy them all in 8KUUUUUUHD in a few years :)

There is strong diminishing returns with resolution, and at this point I doubt 8K optical media is going to be a thing. Nevermind that most movies are not even mastered at full 4K, often combining 4K live action with 2K CGI.

I think at the moment only TV manufacturers want to push 8k to convince us to replace our 4K sets ... they will have hard time convincing studios to do 8k discs

Are there even any 4k broadcasts (sports, news, etc)?

So I agree that physical 8k media is unlikely ... won’t stop streaming services to rush upscaled 8k to differentiate themselves as premium

PS ... from my usual viewing distance it’s hard to tell what is UHD and what is HD on most of the titles
