Title: Backup schedual
Post by: maid on May 02, 2019, 07:01:13 pm
Is there any way we can force an automatic backup?
My system failed this morning and I had to restore a backup, only to note that it was two days old.

many files had been changed in those two days, hence a lot of work to do now.

You can use the Media Center "Scheduler" under "Services & Plugins" to run the "mc25.exe /MCC 20011,1" command as often as once a day. See https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center_Core_Commands for parameter options.
I haven't tested, but running this command with the ",1: silent automatic backup" parameter may replace the current automatic backup, while the ",0: normal" may provide an additional backup to the automatic backups. Test it.

If you want it to run more than once a day, you can use the Windows Task Scheduler to run it as often as you like. In fact, you might even be able to trigger a backup based on some event related to MC.

Or perhaps better yet, use the Windows Task Scheduler to create a backup every time the PC wakes from Sleep, if you let your PCs sleep and that makes sense. You would just need to find the Event Log, Source, and ID setting to identify the Wake Event, and use that as a trigger, perhaps with a slight delay so that the PC doesn't try to create a backup as soon as it wakes. Google will help with that. Ask if you can't find that information. Or start here: https://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/308855-using-task-scheduler-restart-program-upon-wake-sleep.html

Or if you shut down your PCs, create a backup on reboot. Or on any number of other events.

You can also just press Ctrl+Shift+B to create a Library Backup at any time you want.

I don't know why you wouldn't see Scheduler. It has been there forever, and it isn't a Feature that can be turned off.

See the image for the location and a sample task.

Found it
I have put it in there as best as my knowledge allows.
I have set for every day does this backup go into the backup folder I designated?
Thanks again, the wiki is too complicated for me to understand.

The Library Backups will go into the folder you have set in "Options > File Location > Program Files > Library Backups".

I have run it twice this morning by changing the Start Time in its configuration, and it is working. It created backup files.

Rather than using Windows Explorer, I check for the backup files by going to "Files > Library > Restore Backup > Browse" as that way I know MC will look in the location set in  "Options > File Location > Program Files > Library Backups", and that is an easy way to view all the backup files. I reverse sort that directory so the most recent backups are at the top. Windows remembers my sort setting for that directory.

Are you sure no backup was created?

You were correct, I dont know how it happened but MC was creating a backup not were I had instructed.

I think its working now thanks again

I wasn't sure, but I thought it may only work if you have MC, or Media Server running. I didn't check that, but it makes sense as MC doesn't create a Windows Task to launch this.

So, either;
1. Always leave Media Server running so that the task will launch. (Check that works, and doesn't cause other issues for you, with the way you use one library and two PCs. I'm still not sure this will wake the PC from Sleep.)
2. Change the time to a time that you usually have MC running.
3. Set up a Windows Task to do the job.
4. Just use Ctrl+Shift+B to run the backup as required, such as after making changes.
