Title: License Expires after changing comp name & wor
Post by: eruji on May 01, 2003, 11:51:59 pm
I changed my computer name and workgroup today on my laptop and it now says that my 30 days are up. this happened to  me before when i changed my profile name in WinXP pro as well.

i tried renaming my computer and workgroup back to what it was and still no luck.

so here is the 2nd restore ill have to use when i really dont feel like i should have to.

is this how the license protection is supposed to work?

I just noticed the same thing on my system.  I was running .161 and when I launched it today, I got the message about the license (and trial period).

I have had networking problems at home for the last week or so (XP boxes seeing/sometimes not seeing each other and not allowing access to shared folders), so I've been changing box names and workgroups in troubleshooting.

I agree with eruji: I don't believe we should "lose" a license restore on something as simple as workgroup and machine name changes (although I completely understand the implications such actions might have).  I have to wonder if I used my laptop at work (as I have in the past) under a different domain name, would that blow my license everytime I brought it back home . . . ?

Surely, there are other parameters that MC can check to ensure that it is not being pirated.  Or at the very least, remember prior workstation and workgroup/domain name combinations so that if you roll back, so will MC.

I'll be sure to change my workgroup back BEFORE I restore the license and hope that it's not necessary to change it again in resolving the network issue.

I don't know the answer, but could you keep the same computer name?  When I move back and forth, I change workgroup only.  Microsoft could do this a lot more neatly if they tried, IMO.

I also have a serious problem with the licensing system. I own MJB 8 and qualify for the free upgrade to MC 9. However, I keep losing my license. Until I read this thread I thought it was something I was doing - I am not technically proficient at all. I use MJB for the jukebox and TV functions only.
My job takes me to different locations several times a year. I connect my laptop to different networks and have to change the name and workgroup at least eight times in a year(will probably be more this year) and each time I have to restore. As I now understand it I have to restore my license each time and will quickly run out of restores. In fact I now only have 2 restores left until my 10 restores for the year run out.
Is there a solution for this problem?

Make sure you have the latest version.

I have a dim memory of this problem coming up about 3 months ago and someone finding the answer.  I think it had to do with another program that was changing the name of the machine or the workgroup (maybe just uppercase to lowercase or vice versa).  It may have been only for machines that were switching from one network to another.

Try a search here.  Someone found the answer.

If you run out of restores, write jimh @ jriver.com with a description of why it happened.

I know that the "NetSwitcher" software (and maybe others) had this problem with MC licenses. The problem was fixed in MC so if you upgrade to the latest version, you should be set.

JimH and JohnT - Thanks for the suggestions. I have now installed v.172 and have one restore left. I don't use any netswitching programs, just make the changes manually when I connect to the different networks. I will be changing to another network in approx. three weeks time so I'll see what happens. If I have to use my last restore then, I will take you up on your offer JimH and email you with the details.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
