I have searched and cannot find anyone reporting the same behavior i am experiencing.
When playing DSF files only i get the following output
When volume bar in playback screen is less than 98 i get no sound.
When volume bar is either 98 or 99, i get a static sound.
When volume bar is at 100, every file play perfectly
My set up is files are local on nas and streamed to renderer and played on my stereo system.

Don't think you can apply dsp (ie volume settings) to straight dsf playback, volume must be 100% or ypu get the side effects you mention. I may be wrong on this - who knows?
-
Yeah, some DSD-capable DACs require volume for DSD playback to be at 100% or else you'll get static and noise issues. It's a known thing about some DACs requiring that for DSD playback and it's not a bug.

DSD drivers should not respond to volume settings, but some do. MC cannot correctly change the volume of a DSD stream, except in the one case where it is set up to do that in conjunction with a specific DSD driver.
There have been requests to maximize volume when playing DSD through ASIO, like there is for WASAPI, but so far that has not been implemented. Multiple people have been tripped up by trying to play DSD with less than 100% volume. Fortunately, it is only an issue on some DACs.
Since MC cannot correctly change the volume of a DSD stream, except in that one special case, I would consider trying to change the volume a bug. Having an option to maximize the volume would be a fix.

Until it's fixed you could use Zoneswitch to send your DSD files to a zone wih maxed volume.

thanks to all who responded. already knew something was up ... just thought i would start a thread in case anyone else had the same problem and couldnt find anything via a search.
