Title: MC25 issues with Win 10?
Post by: Genkifd on August 28, 2019, 02:09:09 am
hi,

wondering if anyone has any solutions for my latest issue.

my server is running windows 10 Pro the latest update with MC25. once MC25 is loaded, the HDD (where all my music is stored) constantly is utilized 100%. tried to reinstall MC25 no luck. This HDD activities has been for days. Crashes MC and makes MC unuseable. slow to play music even.  Only way is to stop MC from startup. once activated the HDD is constant once again.

previous to these last couple of weeks the system would run great with no hickups.

Please advise.  thanks

You should create exceptions for all the executables in the MC installation directory in your anitvirus program.  Don't let it scan any activity by MC.  MC does a lot of disk i/o as it scans files, so I could see an AV program causing these issues.

If that doesn't resolve it, check resource monitor to confirm which process is doing all the disk i/o.

Also it’s possible MC is analyzing audio for volume correction ... I don’t remember exactly where the option for that is located though :/

Good thought tij.  But those files would be small.  What can really get the disk thrashing though is if you have MC doing audio analysis on video files.  30GB bluray rips keep MC grinding the disk for a long time, especially if it's doing more than one simultaneously.

Check to see if your auto import settings have any audio analysis going on.

It might not just be Audio Analysis, but the relatively new HDCD functionality, and the analysis that triggers. If your audio library is large, that can take a long time to complete.

See https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,121124.0.html

Search the Options for HDCD, using the search field at the bottom.

Search the Release Notes for HDCD changes: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Release_Notes_MC25

With the latest version of MC25 most of the problems with HDCD can now be avoided through settings.

Otherwise;
Fix your Antivirus as above.
Look into what exactly is thrashing the hard disk. Is it MC or something else? Task Manager may show you that. If it doesn't, there are better tools. Ask.

Could possibly be Thumbnailing as well if you have a large number of files. Try dropping the creation threading to Low.

So far Taming Windows Defender has not done one thing. its been obtaining thumbnails for most of the day (600 / 7500).

I have about 500 albums on this HDD. but when i get home ill try the other suggestions. thanks.

Are the files on the internal hard disk or on an external disk?

Most external USB drives are USB 3.0.  They won't work well on a USB 2.0 port.

The files on all on my internal 3tb HDD just for music files.

update: about 50% done but still very slow. have done all the setting. just have to wait till its finished i guess.

OK after thumbnailing for 2 days - still HDD going crazy - cant even transfer files to the drive unless i restart the computer without jriver booting up.

i believe i have found the problem. every time i copy an audio file in my drive it will automatically get the thumbnail - getting the thumbnail activates the drive 100% for a few minutes.

never use to do this with previous version of MC25.

You sure analyze audio is switched off in auto import?

double checked and yes analyze audio is switched off.

plays music ok (well better than before). what it sometimes does not is when its playing any album the hdd (where the files are located) starts 100%. stops playing. waiting for a few minutes then its ok again. after some time the HDD 100% again.

Stop guessing, it's getting us nowhere.

Please do as I said in my first post, and check the resource monitor.  It will identify the exact process that is doing all the disk I/O when your drive is so busy.

If you don't know how, google it or start the task manager, go to the performance tab, and click the "Open Resource Monitor" button.

Have you excluded your Music Drive in Defender, I had a similar issue until I did so

Is your Win10 OS on an SSD or a HDD

I have a working drive (inluded in Defender scans) , once I am happy the file is "Clean" it is transferred to the Music HDD which is NOT monitored by Antivirus . My drives are "quiet" normally unless transferring music or analysing a new file etc

I'm Windows 10, OS & MC Library on 256 SSD, PC i7, RAM 16 GB , Working HDD 21 Tb, Music HDD 4Tb, Video HDD 4TB. My PC is very busy, SQL Server , Roon & MC running constantly but with no issues.

im running windows 10 Pro 64 bit. boot drive is a 256gb SSD, 3tb for music, 8tb for movies, 2tb for personal. use to run pretty well until the latest updates from both MC and windows.

Looking into windows Resource Monitor only indicates to me the file mc is trying to play. once it stops the hdd goes back to normal. worse its random. sometime works perfectly sometimes it plays half the album then freezes. I can see it generating thumb nails but ive told MC to stop
