The files are "protected" with encryption.  That's what the m4p extension tells you.

Yep, you'll only be able to play those files in iTunes (or the new Music app in Catalina) because of the DRM in the files. MC can't play those protected AAC files with the .m4p extension.

I've never bought any DRM itunes songs.  So I lack experience with them.

But I read (and just looked up) that itunes does not do that any more.  There's no more DRM.  "ITunes Match" was/is a service for upgrading your DRM'ed itunes songs to non-DRM (not protected, readable by anything) songs.

I'm not sure how that works now, as searching for this brings up links to "itunes plus".  I don't have the time or desire to research this further, but perhaps this will help the orginal poster figure out how to upgrade his purchased songs to DRM-free versions that he can play with MC or any other player.

Brian.

When I tried doing the upgrade to non-protected AAC it didn't work so I think that service has been removed by Apple.

There used to be - and may still exist - a way to synchronize your library to your iCloud account, delete the local file and then download the iCloud file which will then be m4a, rather than m4p. I had a philosophical problem with that and replaced all my mp4 files with M4a files from another vendor.
