Title: HDR10+ and/or Dolby Vision support
Post by: ppataki on December 07, 2019, 04:04:03 pm
Hello,
Will v26 support HDR10+ and/or Dolby Vision decoding and/or passthrough?
If not, are there any plans to enable them?
These are becoming more and more widespread
Thank you

Dolby Vision only works in mp4 (using public Dolby tools to mux) ... can get HD sound in that container with PCM but no Atmos or DTSX ... unless using Oppo

Simple reason ... nobody knows how to decode Dolby Vision ... and those who do are under NDA (non disclosure agreement) ... even PowerDVD cannot get licence to do DV

HDR10+ is retained in MKV container ... so theoretically should work on TVs that have them (i cannot test it as i am still using 2016 OLED for its 3D)

pass through should always work not?

not with dolby vision ... it has proprietry components in standard playback chain

DV disc has 2 video stream ... one normal 10bit 4K hdr and one 1080p DV stream ... players are expected to (1) combine those streams to produce 12bit DV stream and (2) output that through hdmi to DV displays.

Step (1) no one knows how to do ... same for step (2) ... ppl pay licence fee to get those into their product ... and so far none has been granted to PC based players

Now some DV TV have build in players that can do DV ... but those only accept mp4 ... so no Atmos or DTSX.

DV is a mess ... my current 2016 LG OLED has DV logo ... but it cannot play certain new titles with newer DV version ... and it cannot do XBox DV too. Basically, buying latest TV with DV logo does not guarantee it will be compatible with newer version of DV in the future
