Title: mj can't read playlists from other programs?
Post by: Veej007 on July 30, 2003, 02:21:00 am
i am having trouble getting media jukebox to read playlists (pls, m3u) made by other programs.  somewhere along the way i think i remember hearing that that sort of compatibility only comes with the paid version, and that playlist compatibility is disabled in the trial version after a certain period of time has passed.  is this true?

if it is, so be it.  if not, then that means that it's worth my time to try to figure out what's wrong here.

I don't think it's a plus feature.  Did you import the playlists?

Many functions are deactivated when the 30 day trial ends. Reading those playlist formats may be one of them, because MJ does have pls & m3u support. Try using Tools>Import Media, after verifying that you have pls & m3u checked in File Associations under Tools>Options. The playlists should appear under Mixes in the tree view.

i have tried both importing them and just opening them.  they show up in the playlists section under "mixes," but the playlists appear to be empty.  when i click on them, it says "please select file to play."

so, do we know if m3u and pls support are in the plus version only?  can somebody please verify this?

As you can see, it is nothing but a text file. Open up one of yours with Notepad. Does it contain valid path and filenames?

Following is a sample path from my database using the "Export Playlist" function, saving the mix as an .m3u file. MJ, however, will not recognize the data. Only when I export the playlist in the .mpl format can I retrieve and play the mix, plus other programs will not recognize .mpl. Please help.

\\Server\Eric\My Music\Clash\Combat Rock\Clash - Combat Rock - 07 - Overpowered by Funk -.mp3

I don't get it. You say MJ created the "Overpowered" example but won't recognize it afterwards? MJ can handle UNC's generally (AFAIK) but maybe the other prog's can't. If you use a drive letter mapping instead of the UNC then it should work universally, so your example would be something like...

x:\My Music\Clash\Combat Rock\Clash - Combat Rock - 07 - Overpowered by Funk -.mp3

Mentioned recently was that using WinAmp to generate m3u's sometimes left the path off depending on the location of the media files (like in your My Documents folder...or even the default My Music directory).

Yup. I export my playlists to a central server for availability on connected machines. Seems the only way I can retrieve the mixes is to export in the .mpl format, which the client machines will recognize upon retrieval. If I export in the .m3u format (per my sample), all I get is an empty window. Other jukebox programs do not seem to recognize .mpl, and my preference would be to save in industry-standard .m3u. What to do??

Well...that is a duesy (pun intended). It's got to be the UNC path. For experimental purposes, try mapping the music dir with a drive letter and then see what happens.

i found this trouble when i tried to use the windows playlist of  .asx  it did not work.

and when i play other playlists .m3u from winamp or from mjb  itself   they play but not in the list form what mjb is doing is opening them and adding the songs to the playlist area under a  new playlist.  but it will not play the list in the order of the orginal playlist.   ?

so i just stopped doing that. ;D  and use mjb but do not make playlists for it only inside its own playlist area.

i do use the free one yet.
