Try downloading and installing again.
Antivirus software could cause it.
-
thanks - did that but now it will only open in read only mode
-
it seems that when I place mc26 into my applicaions folder it will not open. I can open the downloaded version. I also have mc 25 in my applications folder - which opens without problems. Any suggestions? Thanks
-
macOS?

mac - sorry posted to wrong group

What version of macOS are you using?
-
10.13/6
-
Standard or limited user?
Also MC asks for some permissions on first run, did you allow them?
-
standard - was not prompted for the permissions - where are they located
thanks

System Preferences->Security and Privacy->Privacy
It looks like 10.13 might not require it though it seemed like accessibility was necessary for Retina monitors.
Do you have a MC icon in the top bar? If so you have it running in server mode and so any other copy started would be in read-only mode.
-
I don't have an icon in the top bar. I downloaded mc26 - if I open it without placing it in my application folder it will open. When I place it in my application folder it will not open. I can still open mc25 from my application folder. Where is systems preferences located as I can't seem to find it.
Thanks again

Apple Menu

tried that - still no go - when I place mc26 in applications folder it will not open

Does the icon bounce in the launch bar? Do you get an error message at all? What I noticed was that the first time I open a new version, the icon bounces much longer before the MC screen opens than for subsequent times. How long are you waiting?

MC recopies skins, etc on the version change into the users Application Support directory which is why it takes longer to launch when the version changes.

Try deleting the MC26 in the applications folder, emptying the trash and then installing there again.
-
thank you
When I click on the icon in the application folder it does not bounce - it seems as if it is not responding.
I deleted the version of mc26 when reinstalled - -still the same problem.

This only happens to me when another instance of MC or Mediaserver is running. Have you tried to restart your Mac or check with Activity Monitor what processes are running?
-
it is definitely something with the activity monitor. When I went in there , a number of mc26 were running. I closed them and the program worked, but when I quit the program I could not reopen mc26 unless I went back into the activity monitor and closed the program. Any idea why the program is not closing on its' own? thanks

It sounds like Media Server is set to run at macOS' startup, which can cause issues like this. Once you get MC to run, go into MC's Options > Startup and set the Run on Mac startup: setting to Nothing and reboot and see if MC will open normally now.
From there if you need Media Server to work, you'll have to manually start MC and keep MC open for it to work.
-
I used to have a very similar issue. I don't know what I did to solve it but now MacOS is able to terminate the process when I exit/restart and I can automatically start MediaServer on startup without any issues. Could it be the MacOS version?
-
that worked - thank you all

That's possible but I'd hope not. You are on Catalina?
