Title: Suggestion wanted for tagging photos
Post by: dcwebman on April 03, 2020, 06:16:31 am
Hi everybody. Big time user back in the "old" days but when music streaming came out, I stopped managing my large music collection because it was pretty much done. I tried using photo management back then but there seemed to be better tools out there. The problem was I could never decide on that one tool that would be around the following year.

After upgrading to version 26 and getting a new NAS, I tried the photo management again and I don't know what I was thinking all those years. If I had just used MC like I should have done, all my photos would have been tagged and I'd be fine now.

So now I'm starting to go through all my photos and tagging. It's been years since I tagged my music, so I need to relearn how I did it before. I'm trying to decide on the best fields to use for the tagging. I have a website about wine and have been to almost 400 wineries, so I have photos from all those wineries. I want to use the name of the winery so I can easily find them. I'm trying to decide if I should use Keywords, Places, or create a new library field.

This is just the first decision needed but others could come that are similar. I could keep creating new library fields, but thought it may be better to use the existing fields. But eventually there may be too many items in, say keywords, to find things.

Thoughts?

Why don't you post a link to your site?  I could use a virtual drink.

I simply use people, places and date. Obviously people and places may contain multiple entries (like London, England)

And I use Album to wrap the occasion.

I use nested Keywords (e.g. People\Our Family\Billy, Albums\2019\Vacation).  The good thing about Keywords is that they can generally be read by other programs including the Windows OS.

My method is pretty simple.  Date & keywords.  And as previously noted, most other software recognizes these tags.  I usually end up tagging in MS (file.. properties... details... "Date Taken" & "Tags".)  MS "Date Taken" becomes "Date" in MC and "Tags" become keywords after importing.

So with that... the Date field creates Albums pretty automatically... and you can easily search of course (or create views) by date.  I use Keywords for anything else I might want to ever search on to find the image (who, where, what, etc.).  I use the keyword "exclude" on some images... so I can exclude pictures of my boat's carburetor when I create a random slide show of family photos.

Thanks everybody! This forum is as helpful as I remembered it. I now have some great suggestions and need to make a decision.

And for you Jim, it's https://txwinelover.com/ (https://txwinelover.com/). Cheers!
