Are missing files now automatically removed from the database?

Only if you have "Fix Broken Links" set to "Yes" in Auto Import, and Auto Import is running in the background. Or "Yes (protect files on missing drives)" if the drive is accessible but the file is missing, but not if the drive is unavailable (network or USB).
